A messenger was sent post haste for Dr. Chipp in Barkerville and when he arrived two days later he stated the case was very serious but the victim of the assault had a fair chance to recover. EVENTUALLY CAUGHT Word was sent to all government offices with a description of Nicomen but for a time no trace could be found of him any- where and it looked as if it was the last of him. But what he did was to make for the United States where he took up with the Indians who had a Reserve six miles below the line. He kept quiet for two months or more and then began boasting that he had killed two white men in Cariboo. He got the habit of visiting the Indians on the British Columbia side. The chief of the latter Indians told Richard Lowe, constable there, about it and arranged for him to have a look at Nicomen. Lowe met Nicomen and was satisfied he was the man wanted. He told the chief he would give them $100 if they would capture him. A day was set when Nico- men without suspecting it was overpowered and handcuffed. Nicomen had a gun which he always carried, and when he squatted on the ground inside the tent he always laid the gun at his side to be handy. ANOTHER STORY Lillooet and Nicomen along with an- other prisoner who was up for murder were placed on trial. But that is another story. Lillooet gave Queen’s evidence in full. All three were found guilty, Nicomen and the third party being sentenced to be hanged but as Lillooet had given Queen’s evidence his sentence was life imprisonment. When it was explained to Nicomen in the gaol yard he was offered imprisonment if he would hang Barry, the third convict, Nicomen stood up, beat his chest and shouted, “Heap big Injun me, much.” “Nica, halo quash.” (I am not afraid). “Nika halo mameloose copa rope.” (I will not die by the rope). Sullivan recovered but it was three months before he was back to normal. He was a fine husky six-footer and built in proportion; was a graduate of the Irish Constabulary. He continued in the service.
