He was a man called Stephens, and
near at hand on Sloane Square lived
another close friend, Henry Sutcliffe
(who had a perfect alibi for the night
of the shooting).

Young Stephens, the boy friend,
had no apparent occupation, though
he had occasionally held the odd job
for a short time, and claimed to be a
dress designer.

He apparently formed the job
of gigilo very satisfactory, as his
position in the apartment seemed
permanent.

silly frivolous girls, the “gay young
things” of the early thirties, and their
equally inocuous escorts.

Bohemian Life
These youngsters thought the
somewhat older woman “just too
ducky” and felt that they were
seeing life with a capital L, in her
carefree Bohemian atmosphere.

All day long, and through most of
the night, the apartment rang with
music, laughter, and drunken screams,
the supply of liquor being very plenti-
ful indeed.

The noise that emanated from the
place was terrific until someone
called the policeman on the beat.

The uniformed men became used
to these calls, and when the din be-
came too rambunctious, they ordered
the revellers to quiet down.

A Mad Driver

The gay Elvira was well known to
London bobbies, on account of her
habit of speeding through the busy
streets in a powerful car, often with
frightened companions hanging on to
the sides in terror.

Once she was sued for damages
when she drove into the front of a
house, and had had her license re-
voked and been “had up” for shoot-
ing down street lights,

One of her more spectacular
feats was dancing through the
street clad only in a night gown!

She was quite a girl, was Elvira,
and the other tenants of the Mews
were fed up with her — chauffeurs
and their hard-working wives, who
needed their sleep.

Her Aim Was Poor

At one of these parties she was re-
ported to have pointed a gun at
Stephens, shouting, “Ill perforate
you,” but her aim was poor, and the
young man fled to the safety of a
parked car.

The next night the party seemed
to be a bit dull, so they all trooped
out to a restaurant in Soho, where
they had dinner.

When they returned, the other
tenants, who had settled down to
sleep, prepared for a noisy night,
cursing Mrs. Barney and all who
were with her.
