Five albums in six years and still

churning them out. Due to the fact
that 311 simply puts out a lot of
music, they have developed a huge,
not to mention loyal, fanbase.

The six member band has been
around since 1990. This is based on
their first show, opening for Fugazi in
South Omaha in 1990. Since then,
Omaha has become the base of 311,

make a demo tape in Los Angeles.
The demo tape eventually gar-
nished the signing of 311 to
Capricorn (Warner Bros.) and 311
soon began recording in Burbank,
CA, in the renown Cherokee studios.
Between 1994 and 1995, 311
recorded six albums and a lot.(15) of
singles. Since their last (self titled)
album, 311 took a break and did
some touring. At one point all of their
equipment was lost and the band was
almost completely destroyed when
their RV caught fire and was com-
pletely destroyed on the I-44 between
Springfield MO and Kansas City. The
band regrouped by the next day and
performances went according to
schedule on borrowed equipment.
311 has one of the most interesting
origins for their names though. 311 is

that the name stems from the fact that

Jimi (guitar) was out ‘skinny dipping in
a pool (he was about 16/1 7 years old)
and so the. cops arrested him, cuffed
him naked, and took him home to his
parents’ house. Jimi’s dad answered
the door and there’s his son standing
there with the cop butt naked and
cuffed. His dad took one look at him
and yelled to his wife in the othe
room, “Honey, it’s for YOU!” So wa
the origin of 311’s name - Indecel i
Exposure.
While 311 has not released a
album in a while, they did realize.
while back that the six albums tha
they did release in five years was ab
excessive. On the subject, Nick ‘
Hex” (Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guita
says, “We realized this a while ago
and have slowed down a bit. We want
to take our time and make the best
record possible.” With respect to
SoundSystem, “We’ve kept up with
the songs that we are really stoked
on, letting the others move to the back
burner...Life’s not a race:

SoundSystem demonstrates this
the evolution of 311’s sonic ability.
While keeping the rhythm and heavy
riffs found in their. previous albums,
SoundSystem also lends itself to a
wide variety of different styles ranging
from rock to the choppy sounds of
reggae. Almost an experimental
recording, 311 an _ explorational
approach to their music.
