A herculean feather was the head of the anti-social family with equally herculean sons. A vindictive, fearless dominat- ing mother was the dictator in the uncompromising deviltry and hatred which the - self-isolated Donnellys pitted themselves against everybody in the small Ontario community in which they lived. How that mother met her death is one of the most dramatic pages in the book. The author tells the story of murders, arson, theft and unbeliev- able brutality credited to the Black Donnellys and quotes an old song:— Oh, all young folks take warning, Never live a life of hate, Of wickedness and violence lest You share the Donnellys’ fate. Their murdered bodies lie today A mile from Lucan town, But the memories of that awful feud Time never will live down. This review goes little beyond the author’s introduction to his book. His story is presented as fact more gripping than fiction. It is more than a story of crime. It is a tragic, tough- ing and pathetic story. There must be another side. Why did the Tipperary Irish Donnellys, strong, husky, inde- pendent emigrants become so em- bittered that the lives of most of them were ended in a_ bloody massacre and a burning home? This may be told in another story by another author who is preparing a book on the same subject. Now a monument stands near the Donnellys’ home in Ontario. It lists the names of a dozen Don- nellys who met death in the raid on STROMDAHL’S 2nd Avenue and 2nd Sireet ESSO SERVICE QUALITY WITH EXPERIENCE Phone 3237 PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. Could be it was Patrick Donnelly who escaped the massacre of his parents and brothers and seemed to live for only one purpose—to attend the funerals of the ring leaders who led the raid which ended the reign of the Bloody Donnellys. With a Scream of Triumph The author graphically described how Patrick Donnelly would stand quietly in the background at these funerals while relatives wept. “Then as the coffin was being lowered he would leap forward, spit upon it, raise his eyes, clench his fists and raise them to the skies with a scream of incredibly wild triumph.” “Vindictive to the last,’’ the author writes, “Donnelly would shout “There goes another of the bastards to hell.” The author records it was Jack Donnelly’s luck to outlive all the ring- leaders in the raid which ended the reign of the Donnellys. * * M.
