Before leaving, they put some morsels of meat on the teeth of Jay, who was lying with his mouth open. When the fire had died down, Jay awoke and said to his anus: “Jay, I think the food must be ready. The fire has burnt low.” He went to the pot and grasped one leg, which came away easily; then did the same with several birds. “Yes,” he said, “the legs come away easily; the food must be ready.” But when he lifted the cover he found nothing but stones. Great was his surprise, especially since there was a taste of food in his mouth. Thoughtfully he picked his teeth. “T must have had a meal after all,” he said. Then he felt his stomach. “No, I can’t have eaten.” Again as he picked his teeth his perplexity increased. “T must have eaten,” he muttered. But his empty stomach drove him to the conclusion that he had not. Deciding that his anus must have played a practical joke on him, he determined to punish it severely. He built a blazing fire, then turned his back to it and began to toast his rump. Alas! As the culprit suffered, so did Jay himself. When he could bear the pain no longer he fled. HERRING AND OLACHEN Long ago, Herring had a small dorsal fin near his tail, as do olachen, trout, and salmon at the present time. At that period Olachen had no fin, but on his head a large mass of unruly hair which defied his efforts to brush it. The two agreed to trade, Olachen giving some of his grease for Herring’s fin. That is why, today, Herring has no fin on his back, as Olachen has, and why the head alone of the former is greasy. THE DEFEAT OF COLD WIND Soon after the first people had come down to this earth, while they _were still semi-human, many were killed by Cold Wind, who destroyed all the berries and green things, so that both men and animals were in dire straits for food.
