{ “ SES > Look Up..... Way Up! Things to see ‘in the Night sky! The Editorial. Prepared by ADO I would like to thank all of you star buffs and on_lookers_ who have been reading my column these last few issues: The stars are owned by no one and are therefore meant to be shared between all of us here on this tiny spec of dust in our great cosmic galaxy. I’m not in the habit of writing in the paper in an editorial fashion but ~ I was unable to rustle up a SKY UPDATE this week so I’d thought I’d just share some personal insites with my readers. : I’m_ originally from Vancouver and when I was younger a majority of my paper route money went. to telescopes, books, chartsand the like. Many summer( and winter) nights were spend lying in my back yard gazing into the heavens looking for satellites, stars, planets and other such observable events. Through out my mid-teens I would enjoy long camping trips on Vancouver Island looking for the best Nature had to offer in both the beautiful landscapes of © BC and the awesome night skies. The remotest areas along the coast were a common friend to both my boots and my tent and not only did the splendor that is BC call me to trek the forests, but the views away from the “light wash” of the _city glare always presented themselves to me as spiritual experience. The night sky in these remote areas-was bright enough to read a star chart by and the brilliance of billions and billions of stars (Thank you Car] Sagan )} has the ability to reach into the depths of your ‘soul and show you the essence of all Eternity. I am not the only person to grace the Earth that has a deep love and respect for the points of light in the sky. For millennia, the stars have given mankind the drive to achieve the impossible, to think the unthinkable and do the improbable. We question the very existence of our relationship with the universe and those around us because the stars have been, are, and will be, long after our mortal bodies have come. and gone. We learn that ours is an ordinary star among billions of galaxies of which hold millions of stars and we, must ask, “Are we all that there is? Are we alone?” We know that the planets formed from the dust of the universe and that same dust created the stars others that are far reaching into other parts of space. World religions state that man was made of the Earth and té this I am in agreement (evolution or creation, which ever is more comfortable). Look at it this way, look at the paper you hold in you hand, see the person closest to you and see the sun and stars in the sky We are all of us are of the same material. For generations we have argued over our petty differencés but in essence we all come from common roots. Whether we be black, white, green, male, female, leaded or unleaded, oak or birch, dark matter or NC-17, our difference are irrelevant, it is our collective bond that we need to discover. Mankind will stop making the mistakes of the past when it comes to recognize one indisputable common unifying fact. Everything that we are and all that will ever be around us now and long after our race left this reality is eternally connected. We are not alone and we are not as different our fears suggest. In reality we never could have been, for we are all related, not‘only to each other but through and with the cosmos we live in. We are all simply a melange of Star Dust, and right now and forever there is a piece of the universe in each and everyone of us and piece of all of us in each other. You Can Get there From Here, Just not on Time During the spring break I went back to Vancouver Island. Rather than take the Bus with it’s too small seats and stale air I took the train. So at seven o’clock the train leaves the station. Being nearly empty and having large seats already the ride was relaxing and comfortable, even if the three meals that are served on the trip were smaller than ICL’s. Since the plan was to get a cab at sunset beach, five minutes rom the Horseshoe ‘ bay, I wasn’t really worried as that gave me an hours leeway in making the last ferry to the island. We'll the train was an hour and ten minutes late. Having missed that connection I rode the train all the way into North Vancouver. Arriving in the station I was in the middle of an industrial park. I then proceeded to take a cab to the Books on Fourth Phone 563-6637 Fax 563-6610 Toll Free 1-800-303-2950 In The Former Danish Interiors Building 1685 Third Ave. Prince George, B,C V21 3G5 Tsawwassen ferry, first asking the cabby if we could make the last sailing from there. He said yes and off we went the long way around. Not only did the cab cost me twenty dollars more than it should have, (he took the long way around), The Tsawwassen ferry departed as the cab arrived, I ended up having to get relatives from Langley pick me up and then drop me off again the next morning. Here’s my advice for those who travel; always make sure you have at least two hours to make your connection be it plane, train or automobile, and if you miss the connection and there isnot another one in the next few hours, arrange a place to stay ahead of time just in case.
