The concept for this project originated in Quebec during the mid 1980's. The credit for its beginning goes to Dr. Jean-Marie De Koninck, a university professor and coach of Laval University’s swim team. Operation Red Nose is a FREE service provided by volunteers. Vehicle owners who do not feel like driving can call 563- NOSE (6673) and ask for a team to help them out. The team of three volunteers (driver, navi- gator, and escort driver) drives to the location of the vehicle owner. The driver and navigator enter the location and find the client, they then drive the vehicle of the client wherever they ask - to be driven. The escort driver follows, and picks up the rest of their team once the delivery has been completed. The team will happily drop off passengers before tak- ing the owner, and their vehicle to the final desti- nation. Of course every- one in the borrowed vehicle must be wearing seat belts, if there is a shortage of seat belts, questions ideas: Jenny Biem (Coordinator) pgpirg@unbc.ca, Christine Callihoo (PIRG Board member) ccalli- hoo@hotmail.com, David Juniper (PIRG Board member) juniper@unbc.ca. or Operation Red Nose. the volunteers will do multiple trips. This service will begin December 10th and run every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 9:00 pm to 3:00 am. The last day of service is December 31. If you plan to drink this holiday season be aware of ways to get home that don’t involve drinking and driving. The Prince George operation is. fundraising for UNBC’s athletic department, and although this is a FREE service, donations are graciously accepted. BC Tel mobility, the Forestry Service, and ICBC have all sponsored the event by contributing commu- nication devices and paying for the extra insurance of the volun- teers’ vehicles. There are three posi- tions that you can volun- | teer for: driver, navigator, and escort driver. To be a primary driver volunteers must be 21 years old.
