teen hundreds.

Colonel Blood had served in the
Parliamentary Army during the civil
war and had been bestowed an estate
confiscated from an Irish loyalist.
After the Restoration it was taken
from the colonel and restored to the
original owner.

With the Lord Lieutenant of Ire-
land, upon whom had fallen the duty
of ejecting the colonel from his estate,
as his main target the infamous
colonel became an outlaw; forever
plotting vengeance, ringleader of a
band of kindred spirits with plunder
and murder their objectives.

Among the first of the colonel’s
crimes to which the author draws
attention, is that of a man’s body
found hanging from a lamp post.

“A Papist Spy. Hanged by me,
Colonel Blood. This ninth day of
November, 1670” was written on
a paper pinned to the dead man’s
clothing.

There had been many crimes before
this and there were many after.

A price was placed on the colonel’s
head. A genius for disguise, relentless
methods of torturing or murdering
persons who threatened or stepped
into the path of Colonel Blood or
his nefarious gang enabled him to
continue his long reign of murder,
theft, terrorism and plunder.

Disguised as a Parson

The climax of his career was the
theft of the Crown Jewels. For this he
used one of his favorite disguises, that
of a parson.

This is one of the most dramatic
incidents in a book full of suspense
and excitement.

The author tells his story skilfully
and the details will be found in a
book worth ten times its price to
those who enjoy history told ruggedly,
tense and lustily.

How he was arrested, shackled,
thrown into a dungeon in the Tower,

brought to trial before the monarch
of the period;—how with his arro-
gance, bravada and eloquence, Colonel
Blood talked himself out of death on
the scaffold to a position of power in
the royal court provides two breathless
chapters of one of the most striking
stories ever written.

For women readers it should be
added the story is loaded with
romance. Of Colonel Blood, it is said,
“Women loved him; men hated him;
all feared him.” * *
