Allen steps in Macaca: During his August campaign, Republican senator George Allen was giving a speech in Virginia when he singled out S.R. Sidarth, a Univerisity of Virgina student. Allen pointed to Sidarth, a native of Virginia who is of Indian descent and referred to him as “Macaca,’ saying, “welcome to America and the real world of Virginia.” Though it is not known what Allen meant by“macaca,’ it was pointed out that it is a type of monkey, and has been used as an ethnic slur. Allen later apologized and said “macaca’ was a nickname he and his staff had given Sidarth because it sounds like “mohawk.” When told of this, Allen said he has a mullet. 5, Other Best New Leader 1.
