oo” UNBC Hosts Quality of Life Conference Brian Dougherty From the 22nd to the 25th of Au- gust, UNBC hosted the Quality of Life Conference, which attracted academic scholars from all over the world. The primary objective of these re- searchers was to bridge the gap between science and theory in re- gards to what is the most livable society. In all, approximately ninety-five pages were presented at the con- ference. Professor Alex Michalos from UNBC's political science department, who himself isa quality of life expert, chaired the committee which was respon- sible for organizing the five day event. Of special interest to the con- ference, was research presented on nations currently experienc- ing political, social, and eco- nomic transitions. The countries which were of special interest included the former communist states of Romania, Czechoslovakia, Estonia, and the Ukraine. It was the first time for quality of life re- search to be made public on these countries since they adopted demo- cratic political structures. Chang- ing social condition in South Af- Tica was also on the agenda. The next annual Quality of Life Conference will take place in the United States. North Carolina will sponsor the event in November 1997, UNBC PROPOSAL FOR ACADEMIC RESTRUCTURING The University of Northern British Columbia Planning Committee unveiled a number of proposals for academic re- structuring, emphasizing that they are for consideration and discussion. . The report calls for the num- ber of faculties and deans to be reduced from five to two, (in July 1997)..The primary aca- demic units would be reduced to 14 departments and schools, which would replace the 22 ex- isting programs. Schools would be the units providing profes- sional programs, while de- partments would offer aca- demic studies. The Faculty of Manage- ment and Science: would oversee the Department of Physical Sciences (Chemis- try and Physics), Mathemat- ics, Statistics and Computing Science, Environmental and Earth Sciences, Biology, as well as the School of Forestry and Management and Re- source Tourism. The Faculty of Arts, Social and Health Studies would con- tain the Departments of Lan- guage and Literature, Econom- ics, Politics, and Northern and International Studies, History and Philosophy, Human Stud- ies (Sociology, Anthropology, First Nation Studies, Gender Studies, Women's Studies), and Psychology, as well as the Schools of Education, Nursing and Community Health, and Social Work. SHALL WE DANCE? Originally, we intended for a letter (space) in Over the Edge early April. The letter was typed, but the issue of Over the Edge was not. Say no more right now but we sincerely thank all who voted for Brenda and John for the N.U.G.S.S position. It has been a learning experience so far to say the least. Brenda and I are still getting along and haven't threatened each other too much. We are both psyched as hell for the job rest assured. If we fuck up, let us know. I don't really know what order or what I should say now be- cause there is a lot to tell. The Backyard BBQ you ask? Well let me tell you. 5 bands for $10.00 for students with beer garden. The bands? In order of appear- ance to (to date): local band 2 Minute Hate, Hip Hop Mechan- ics (Vanc), another white male (Vanc), Real McKenzies (Vanc), and headliner Bif Na- ked (Vanc). I truly believe we have something for everyone. I regretfully tell you now that the Hip, Garth Brooks, Smash- ing Pumpkins, Sarah McLaughlin, or the Three Ten- ors will not be playing or ever will play here at UNBC. At least not here...but, if any of you know them or their cous- ins, do not be shy to tell us. Thanks. More movie nights at the Canfor are planned, improv. and theatre sports, more dances with themes, (ie. C+W, 60's, Disco), and even a (gasp) first-ever campus beer garden/shin dig. Oh my Gawd!!! Heaven forbid! Sue us NOW please!! (kidding) TELE? | Sorry, Brian. The Natural Re- sources off-campus dance in March at the Knights of Colum- bus Hall went over extremely well. I couldn't help notice they have a disco ball. hmmmm There is some chatter about a first-ever bicycle criterium road race around the University Loop, so if any of you are roadies and didn't bring your bike up, ask Mom or Dad to send it up for you. Oh yeah, the Crag is the only place in Prince George with a climbing wall, I think, they do not have a portable one that we can rent, and a suggestion was put in to the steering committee (for new building) about putting bolts on the side building for climbing. I'll ask what became of it. Liability, of course, will rear it's ugly meaning I'm sure. Vol- ley-ball courts! If you have an idea but don't know about some of the red-tape, or who to see, mabye we can help. We can't duplicate other Universities, but then again why would we? Come for a visit..... Ask ques- tions, give suggestions. We work for you. John and Brenda, Directors of Social and Promotions
