December 2 2002 Over Fie 13 Grudge Match! Local Scene Comes to Life with a Vengeance! By Kathleen De Vere Is the local rock and roll scene dead in Prince George? Local bands like Ceremony, Transgressor and We Killed Him would say it’s not, and the proof arose on November 16th when those bands got togeth- er and played an incredible show at the YAP office. For the uninitiated, the usual local show is held in the cramped space of Growlies Pizza, located downtown on 3rd avenue, and while they’re staged with good intentions, there often isn’t enough space to have a really good show. The “Grudge Match” show, as it was advertised as on the posters around UNBC had over 160 people attend, a stunning success for the jaded local scene. The evening opened with fresh blood in the form of Transgressor, who played their very first show in front of a live audience that evening. Transgressor are all under 20, and don’t have too much musi- cal experience, but they played ant a cool phone’? ry this subtle hint. Ceremony are trying to bring back cock rock in a retro Danzig kind of way. Clad in tight leather pants, they took the stage, deter- mined rock out. Ceremony | plain and simple, are fun. They’re quasi glam rock, but slightly menacing at the same time. Ceremony’s vocalist Matt is quite good, and brings to mind other darkly seductive vocalists like Danzig and Peter Steele. Ceremony also put on a fan- tastic stage show, with the bass player Sasa impressing all the women in the audi- ence with his sweet stage moves. The highlight of the set was their cover of ‘Send me an Angel’ which was not only cool, it was really well played, definitely rocking the house. The headliner of the show was We Killed Him, a band | that have been together for over a year and half, but have only played a handful of shows, due to the lack of venues. The benefit of this is that We Killed Him is an incredibly tight and talented rock outfit. We Killed Him are riff rock in the style of Queens of the Stone Age, with some funk thrown in for good measure. We Killed Him captured the attention of the audience with their straight ahead rock style, managing to get the audi- ence banging their heads in time with the beats. Frontman Jeremy captivated the audience, with his pas- sionate and powerful vocals, and brought a really unique twist to We Killed Him’s cover of Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song. Rather that try to unsuccessfully copy the higher register of Robert | Plant, Jeremy sung the song in a lower register, without loosing the original great- ness of the tune. All in all, “Grudge Match” was excellent, and the next time you're looking for some- thing to do on a weekend, consider checking out one of these fine local bands.
