Page 6 August 1980 Cassiar Courier The general public is probably not fully aware of the number of services provided by the Surface Department, here in town. The lack of entrepreneurs in the area necessitates the need for the majority of local maintenance programs being carried out by this department. A crew of twenty-seven persons — 15 of whom are carpenters and carpenter’s ap- prentices, 3 painters, 6 labourers, 2 truck drivers and a tool man — are all concerned with the maintenance of facilities for families, single people, and the public at large. Townsite areas not covered pictorially are: the pumping of septic tanks, building snow roofs for trailers, overhauling and burying of steam and water lines, and a constant stream of general maintenance. As well as the townsite needs, the Surface Department must also work at many jobs on the plant and mine sites. There are constant additions and/or renovations being carried out in one building or another, particularly the mill, as well as regular main- tenance, all of which often has to be done under difficult weather conditions. Other activities include such things as building cable stands, cutting glass for automotive repair, making signs and cabinets, and of historical interest e+ until quite recently, even coffins were built in this SS REPAIR OF LIQUOR STORE/SNACK BAR PREMISES Seats pe tay \ : SAKE BGaS KK SSS THE DOG KENNELS BEING CONSTRUCTED , = ; ‘STRUCTURAL WORK — NEW ROOFS FOR THE : — ARTS CENTRE AND THE DENTAL CLINIC : “SS ESSN fy ‘aiorosaapbanicoeiinagig tiie CAFETERIA RENOVATIONS FROM TIME TO TIME IMPROVE- MENTS ARE MADE TO PUBLIC FACILITIES AROUND TOWN.
