In fact, the past week has been so.incredibly unfair and shitty, I am not really sure what to write about. I thought perhaps I would tell you about the pure hell of registration, but then I am sure most of you know about that. I could tell you that, as an English major, it is extremely difficult to get a degree when the university offers the same — courses over and over again. How can I fill up my requirements when they don’t even offer new courses. But if you are an English major, you already know; and if you are not an English major, why would you care? I almost wrote about love because my girlfriend has been after me for some time to write a column about it. But since during Opinion Pieces Poison Pen the holidays, I caught her fucking one of my friends (not to mention the abuse and sharp objects she hurled my way), my heart just isn’t in it. So what to write about? I have often felt that organized education (i.e. school) destroys and discourages creativity. So many rules and stupid procedures all designed to promote the status quo. In high school I spent more of my time defending myself in the office than I did in class. But it has come to my attention recently that the oppression of creativity continues even at UNBC. Let’s take one small, but good, example of this for a look. So during the eat weeks of December, Residence sponsors a contest among the students for decorating dorm windows. The two main categories are most blatant power consumption (i.e. lights) and most politically incorrect. I was shocked to learn that UNBC, Canada’s most politically correct university, would sponsor such a contest. Even more surprising was that President Jago would be judge. Could a President of UNBC really be unbiased enough to judge a contest about political incorrectness? Apparently not. In a burst of creative spirit, the boys of S305 Res II put together a tasteless, but politically incorrect, mural of Santa sodomizing a reindeer. Needless to say that all who saw it though it was a best bet for most politically incorrect. All that is except Jago. The president, in a spineless move, disqualified the mural from the contest because it was TOO politically incorrect. What a load of bull. The President’s choice to disqualify an obvious winner was in direct opposition to the spirit of the contest. What is worse, it taught many of the students a valuable lesson. The lesson was that UNBC is so insecure that the President would _ bring his personal biases to judge a contest and - that students who use innovative and creative thoughts (that challenge commonly held beliefs) would be excluded from participating in University events. Thank you for making this clear, President Jago. So, who won for most politically incorrect? A snow man. Yes, that is right: a snow man because it was not a snow person. Why not just give qr the prize for most blatant power consumption to a candle in the window? Said one disgruntled student of Jago’s choice for most politically incorrect: “How can he tell it’s a snow man when it doesn’t have a dick?” My point is that if the university has enough courage to sponsor a contest for the most politically incorrect window, it should also have enough courage to judge the contest fairly and without bias. To disqualify an entry that is not only creative but exactly in keeping with the spirit of the contest is unfair and inconsistent. If President Jago intends to run the university with the same bias and anti- creative spirit with which he judged the contest, let his reign be short indeed. Vive la creativity and original thought.
