Jim Langston, Pacific Northwest Golden Gloves champion, receives a word of adivec dre! from Constable Kelly Irving of the B.C. Provincial Police. and several local men gave their time to assist 1n training. Most of these trainers were ex- fighters, such as Jimmy Waldron, who was a well known scrapper throughout northern and central B.C. in the 30's, and Russ Docksteader, who fought up and down the coast in the 20’s. Under these experienced trainers the boys went ahead fast and by the spring of 1947 boys were entered in the tournaments. That year Jimmy Langston, who had been taking on all comers for the past two years, was runner-up in the Golden Gloves in Vancouver, and the following month he was sent to an even larger tournament, the Pa- cific Northwest Golden Gloves, in Seattle, where he won the middle- weight championship. This same boy won the middle- weight championship in Vancouver the following year and then went to Port Arthur to compete in the Can- adian championship, where he was edged out in the final bout by a very close decision. Jimmy has now turned pro and so far has won 5 out of 6 starts. Also in 1947 the Valley Gloves were initiated. This was a tourna- ment open to all clubs in the Fraser Valley, which now takes in clubs from Port Moody, Hammond, Haney, Mission, Abbotsford, L.ang- ley, Chilliwack, Hope, and others. E. J.
