MUMBLES rut MEL This months profile is on ED THIRLWELL, Assistant Mill Superintendent. Ed has been associated with the mining industry since 1930. He first arrived in Cassiar in 1954 as a mill foreman and left in 1962 after attain- ing the position of assistant mill superintendent. A lover of the sun and bikinis, Ed moved his family to California where he was vice-president and plant manager of Pacific Asbestos in Sonora. _ Ed and Eve's home is a warm and hospitable place to visit and watch the games on colour T.V., especially if there is a pool going. Although he has had various problems fishing, such as daughter Susan catching the largest fish a few times, Ed is still an outdoor enthus- - last when ever he manages to find some free time from umping the softball games and OTHER activities. Paul Ripco has offered to take Ed hunting this year but who knows, Ed, maybe Susan will give up fishing someday! - To the motor-bike riders who enjoy going up and down the tailings pile - that's a no-no??t! " - Farewell and good luck to Steacy Alexander who is leaving the lab to hitch-hike around the North before returning to Vancouver and university. -- Betty Lee has left the lab and we understand the Lees will be moving to Vancouver at the end of June. Our best wishes to you in your new home. Thanks for the CLEAN AIR Jim In co-operation with the B.C. Pollution Control Branch, Cassiar Asbestos Corporation is conducting an ambient air monitoring program to evaluate the amount of pollutants in the Cassiar air. Four new stations have been set up and consist of Hi-volume air samplers and related monitoring equipment. Sampling sites were selected to provide overall information on the air quality. Each sampling station is equipped with a device to collect suspended particulate (dust that does not settle), a cannister to catch falling dust, and a sul- phation plate to measure sulphurour emisions. For the past two years, C.A.C.L.'s own Environ- mental Department has also been measuring dustfall at six other selected locations in the Cassiar area, and during the last month a dramatic reduction has been achieved. This change in air quality is the result of the hard work, time spent, ingenuity, and co-operation of the Engineering, Mill and Maintenance Departments. Further improvements are planned for implementation during 1974 and early 1975; when installed these projects will re- duce the atmospheric emissions from the mining/milling operations even further. Areas to be brought up to Level A standards (less than 0.1 grain/SCFM particulate) by early 1975 are the complete Plantsite and Minesite areas. Future issues of the Asbestos Sheet will contain more information on the Clean Air Program of benefit to _ all Cassiar residents, and making your community a more enjoyable place to breathe freely. Jim MacPherson Environmental Control Supervisor OFFICE OBSERVATIONS Farewell to Martin Rooney who worked as a Surveyor's helper. We wish you well wherever you go. Mine Geology welcomes Marshall Meheriuk who hails from Edmonton. The new face in Geology is Ron Lolau from Piteau, Gadsby & MacLeod who are Geotechnical Consultants. Ron is working on Pit design and footwall stability during this summer. Gerry Bermel is back from his month long holiday visit- ing his homeland of Saskatchewan. Arlene Stefanishion is now running the Liquor Store while Les Sirett is on holidays in England.
