R.C.M.P. Reveal Bizarre Story Nazi Spy in Wartime Canada * ByDOUGLAS HOW x among Canadians for half of the Second World War— mainly in Ottawa and didn’t come close to getting caught or even sus- ected despite numerous clues. The R.C.M.P. say his bizarre story, which started one night in May, 1942, after a submarine landed him on a wild and desolate New Brunswick shoreline, is an example of what could happen if war came again. He didn’t get caught. He surren- dered after his money ran out. One reason he didn’t get caught may be that he decided he would not spy after all; that he would live on the $7,000 the Germans gave him, have a good time until it was ex- hausted and then give up. The money was spent Nov. 1, 1944. He surren- dered to police the same day. Most but not all the details of his story were given for the first time recently by the R.C.M.P.’s anti- espionage special branch. Reporters queried them after a brief reference to the incident by Dan Riley (L., St. John-Albert) in a Commons speech. The story still has its mysteries. Only a few Mounties know it all. They refuse to make the spy’s real name public or to say why they won't. They also refuse to give such facts as the name of the Ottawa hotel and A PLAYBOY German Spy lived Sunnydale Golf and Country Club Three Miles North of Courtenay —Public Course— Visitors Welcome COURTENAY B.C. Quickly Liked Him To this day people who knew him in Ottawa under the fake name of Alfred Haskins probably have no idea who or what he really was because the Mounties have never talked to them. He made friends here, went to night clubs, to restaurants and bars, spent money freely and showed a personality which people quickly liked. He spoke fairly good English from having worked in Canada from 1928 to 1932. Soon after he surrendered he led Mounties to the lonely N.B. shoreline near the village of St. Martin’s, where he had buried a two-way portable radio, capable of reaching Germany, after landing there in a rubber boat with three sailors from a U-boat. The radio had never been used. It was in a suitcase wrapped in layer after waterproof layer and was in good shape. In his 30 months in Canada, there were numerous reasons why some Canadian might have caught him. They never did. Twice, once in St. Martin’s, once in Saint John, he passed larger, old- fashioned $2 bills of a type no longer used. Without Questions He was picked up by Montreal police one night in 1942 when they raided a brothel. He got away without any questions by paying a $50 deposit. He was loaded with $7,000 in U.S. funds, mostly $50 bills, at a time when they should have excited some interest. He got them changed into Canadian currency by going to places such as brothels where no questions were asked. He spoke broken English. He had no job but spent lots of money.
