The trio rode off and the rancher
never saw them again, although he
heard of Boone Helm being hanged
in 1864. And curiously enough, al-
though he made enquiries about the
woman, he never set eyes on her
again.

So much for southern Oregon.

Next the Kentucky gun man ap-
peared in the Salmon River district of
Idaho. Rich mineral strikes in 1860
had attracted a few treasure-seekers,
and Florence, Idaho, had developed
into another booming western mining
camp. Perched high in the mountains,
it was (and possibly still is) the loftiest
community in the United States, being
over 11,000 feet above sea level. Be-
hind it, another mountain spur towers
an additional two thousand feet.

Leader of a Gang of Thugs

It was in the spring of 1862 that
Boone Helm appeared in Florence
and he soon gravitated to the leader-
ship of a gang of desperadoes who
flourished on the fringe of the com-
munity.

Enmity sprang up between Helm
and a local gambler named Dutch
Fred. One day Helm walked into a
saloon where the gambler was playing
poker. As he stood at the bar toying
with his drink, Helm in the manner
typical of his kind in that era, taunted
the gambler behind his back, hoping
Dutch Fred would make a move for
his gun—which would be the cue for
Helm to shoot him before he could
get up.

However, the gambler put his
hands in the air, stood up and turning
around walked slowly over to Helm,
who, at the first move, had his gun
out. Ignoring the weapon in the out-
law’s hand, the gambler stood a foot
or two away from the threatening
muzzle, his chest the obvious target.

“Tf you're figuring on shooting me,”

_ = hersaid quietly, “go ahead. If not,

get out.”

The two men, one armed, the other
eyed each other for
seconds. Then Helm’s face broke into
a half crooked unwilling smile.

The bar tender, who had _ been
watching the pair with some anxiety,
