DEASE LAKE 1974 CARNIVAL The Dease Lake 1974 Winter Carnival was held on Sunday, February 10, 1974 at the Dease Lake Airstrip. The competions included nail driving contests, snow. shoe races and log sawing contests as well as a dog sled race and various snowmobile events. I'm sorry I can't give you a complete rundown on all of the winners as I was busy participating as part of the group of snowmobilers that attended from Cassiar. Class dashes, slalom races and a cross country were the attractions for 13 snowmobilers from Cassiar. The winners in the class dashes were as follows: 0-250 cc Ist - Nancy Turner riding an Elan 249 Skidoo. 2nd - Al Cappis on an identical machine. 251-300 cc lst - Vicky Young riding a Polaris 295 Colt 2nd - Carollee Prosser riding a Polaris 295 Colt 3rd - Chris Cleason with his 303 Arctic Cat 350-400 cc Ist - Pat Witwicki riding a 340 TNT Skidoo 2nd - Les Prosser Jr. on an Evinrude 399 Bob Cat 400 & over Ist - Dave Lubbers with his 440 F.A. All of the above winners received very nice ribbons In the Cross Country race a lovely trophy was won by Al Cappis on an Elan 249 Skidoo. Vicky Young was in the prize money with second best time on her Polaris 295 Colt and Bob Sethen took third riding on Elan SS 249 Skidoo. All events were open to men and women so when Vicky Young took 2nd there were a lot of surprized men. Another beautiful trophy was presented to Ross Doody for his dog team entry in the dog sled races. After the activities were over, the Dease Lake Community Club had free hot dogs available for all who attended the Carnival. I'm sure all who attended will join me in saying "thanks" to the Dease Lake Community Club for extending an invitation to Cassiar to particpate in their 1974 Winter Carnival. We are looking forward to next years competitions. The dinner was catered to by the Ladies' Auxiliary (Cub Mothers). A hearty thanks is given to_the mothers who assisted in the preparation and serving of the good food. A special thanks is given to the cookery staff for. their help. The banquet was held during Brotherhood Week (February 16th to 23rd). This week is especially impor- tant to all Cubs and Scouts, as it is during this week that our founder, Lord Baden Powell's birthday (Feb. 22) is celebrated. The boys were asked to wear their uniform - to school to celebrate this occasion. Special guests at the banquet included Ed Michael, President Cassiar Lions Club, sponsoring body of the lst Cassiar Cub Pack and Reverend Peter Nissen, representing the Anglican Church. Unfortunately Father McAllister representing the Roman Catholic Church and Dave Rollie of Watson Lake who is District Commissioner for the Yukon area were unable to attend due to previous committments. After the dinner, the cubs entertained their fathers with skits and songs. Two outdoor films were also shown by Vern Peterson. A special thanks to Frank Nitti who acted as Master of Ceremonies at this function. _ An enthusiastic evening was had by all and we are sure the boys and their fathers will look forward to next year's banquet. If you have any boys that are of cub age (8-11 yrs) and are interested in participating in the scouting pro- gram, we meet every Thursday night from 6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium.
