Page Twenty-two Trouble Was Brewing Had Camille Holland known all this, she would have realized that trouble was brewing when, a few weeks after the couple moved in to Moat Farm, Dougal hired 16-year-old Florence Blackwell to help with the housework. Florence was a_ pretty, pink-cheeked country girl and came from a good honest home in Claver- ing village. The second day she was at Moat Farm, Dougal came into the kitchen as the girl was getting the breakfast ready. With an unpleasant gleam in his eye he slipped his arm around her waist and tried to kiss her. He had hold of the wrong person, for Florence tore herself away and promptly complained to “Mrs. Dougal” who turned on Dougal and gave the captain a piece of her mind. Dougal squirmed, excused himself and promised to be good. But apparently Dougal couldn’t leave well enough alone, for that night, when the house was quiet, and both women were in their bedrooms, Dougal slipped quietly along to the girl’s bedroom and gently tried the door knob. The door was bolted on the inside. In what he probably thought were honeyed tones, he called for “Florry” two or three times through the keyhole. No response. So tiring of the subtle approach, he started to open the door by force. Florence, however, was equal to the occasion and flew to the door and held the handle, screaming for Mrs. Dougal. In a flash, Dougal had vanished to his bedroom, and by the time Camille Holland was on the scene, he was under the covers pretending to be asleep. Miss Holland soothed the girl and slept the night with her and, in the morning, despite his protestations of innocence, Dougal caught the fire of two irate females. Privately, after the first encounter, Florence Blackwell had written and asked her mother to come and take her away. Dougal tried to smooth matters over with the two women, swearing that the noise that Florence heard the night before was caused by the cap- tain winding the clock in the hall. For the next two days the atmosphere of the big rambling stone house was tinged with fear and foreboding. On the morning of the third day (it was May 19), “Mrs. Dougal” told Florence that she and her husband were going in to the village to do some shopping. Florence busied herself with house- work and the day passed. Dougal Returns—Alone Just as darkness fell—Dougal re- turned. Alone. Florence’s fears mounted to terror pitch. “Where’s Mrs. Dougal!” she asked, when she saw that Dougal was alone. “She’s gone to London, my girl,” the “captain” replied, as he hung up his hat and coat. “What!” gasped the terrified coun- try girl, “and left me here alone with ou!” “Oh, she'll be back on tonight's train,” Dougal replied. Twice during the evening Dougal went out in the trap, ostensibly to meet the train from London. If Florence had only thought of it— there was no train from London arrived at Stansted after seven in the evening! At length, just after midnight, when he had returned for the second time, Dougal remarked: “Mrs. Dougal can’t be returning tonight, so you'd better go to bed.” Trembling with apprehension, six- teen-year-old Florence Blackwell sought the safety of her room, and once there bolted the door and put the back of a chair under the knob. Alone in the isolated, gloomy farm- house with the man she dreaded, there could be no help from any quarter. As she related afterwards she stood, fully dressed, all night by the open window, ready to climb out on the roof if Dougal should try and force the flimsy lock. Her terror would have reached stark limits if she had known what CENTRAL HOTEL MR. and MRS. T.
