CONTAMINANTS DISCHARGED These are classified, under the Pollution Control Act, 1967, as discharges onto land, into water, and ‘ into the atmosphere. They originate from three areas: the Minesite, the Plantsite, and the Townsite. Relative locations of discharges are illustrated in Appendix C. Monitoring data is summarized in Appendix D. Sie MINESITE a) Discharges onto land. These are barren waste dumps consisting of coarse broken serpentine, argillite, and associated volcanic waste rock. Their discharge is regulated under the Mines Regulation Act. Areas on which they are deposited are essentially barren mountain slopes above 5000' elevation. Discharges into water. None other than natural seepage from melting ice and snow. Prior to Cassiar's mining operations this melting occurred historically. Coarse asbestos outcroppings were naturally exposed and eroded, and are believed to have caused natural introduction of asbestos
