The initial awards this year marked a
firm step in a closer union between the
youth and police, and give the people of
this province and of Canada an oppor-
tunity to see what the police of Canada
have been trying to accomplish over a
long period of time. The days of “brawn-
billy-and badge” have disappeared and in
their stead we have well-educated men
dedicating their lives to public service.
In their work, however, they realize they
must have the people behind them every

step of the way. What more natural way
to earn the respect of our youth than to
offer them the means of acquiring greater
knowledge, thus assuring themselves a
better place in the world. These young
mean and women will soon be stepping
into places of leadership and they in turn
will be able to instil in their children a
still closer bond between the police and
public.

The theory is well summed up in the
following quotation from an editorial
which appeared recently in the Kamloops
Sentinel :

“Policemen are not ogres even if
they are the instruments: of retribu-
tive justice. That is their job. With-
out the policeman, community life
would be as uncertain as interna-
tional diplomacy. Perhaps this world
of crisis on crisis would be less hectic
had we an international police force
of the calibre of the B. C. Police.
Policemen are the serving arms of
the populace as a whole. As the
people order in their law, so is it
done. Except it be a hardened crimi-
nal, none need fear the policeman.
The chap who by mischance has
broken a minor rule will find a

sympathetic, if gruff friend in jj,
policeman—as long as he doesn’t jm,
to ‘outsmart’ the cop. By Setting ty

officers and constables have signified
their abiding faith in our youth, the

the community, and they have turned
