wire from the instrument. At the
point of his revolver he forced Calla-
dine into the bedroom, and started
to open bureau drawers. The first one
had a sum of American money in a
green cloth bag with a white cord.
This the bandit took, and marched
Calladine downstairs, and into the
basement where he pulled the phone
fuses from the box. About that time
the thought must have occurred to
him to search his victim. which he
promptly did, and Calladine was re-
lieved of two rolls of bills from his
hip pockets.

Dire Threats

On returning to the beer parlor,
Calladine noticed the other two
thugs crouched over Mrs. Calladine
and Flynn. They were still making

warned them to leave off. Calladine
was again asked if he had any more
money. His denials were evidently
believed for the tall bandit motioned
him towards the door with his gun,
and signalled to the others to follow.

After pausing on the step to make
sure the coast was clear, two of the
gunmen seized Calladine by each arm
and marched him away from the hotel
down a winding road. A few hundred
feet from the hotel the two let go of
his arms and hastened ahead around
a bend in the road. The third man
stuck his gun in the hotel man’s back
and ordered him to halt. As they stood
there, Calladine heard the engine of
a car start, and after telling him not
to move, the leader ran ahead out of
sight in the darkness. After a minute
or two Calladine heard the car move
away. He turned and ran back up the
hill to the hotel, and released his
