In his report, Dr. Poole said “the pieces of the bone were drawn into the membrane of the brain by the bullet that penetrated over the nose. One bullet, an inch farther back, had not penetrated the brain. These two bullets did not lacerate the brain substance. The one that penetrated to above the nose no doubt caused death.” An inquest was held on April 25th and Dr. Poole gave the additional evidence that his examination of the rest of the body dis- closed nothing else likely to have a bearing on the death. He was positive that the wounds could not have been self-inflicted. And his reasoning seemed to be borne out by the fact that there were no powder burns and no weapon was found in the shack. Doctor Says “BuLitets Not Porson” One of the jurymen raised the question of the poison pellets, and the doctor replied that he didn’t think the man had taken poison. “If he had taken poison,” said the doctor, “it would have shown on the water - surface of the stomach. The irritation would have caused a redness.” So the coroner’s jury brought in a verdict that the “unknown man” had met his death at the hands of some person or persons unknown. Throughout the testimony Chief Con- stable Lister had had his doubts; despite the medical evidence, there were some things that needed further explanation. One thing that puzzled Lister was the piece of wood which had propped the door shut from the inside. There wasn’t the slightest chance of the dead man’s assailant leaving the shack except through that door—and it was a manifest impossibility for anyone to prop the wood into position standing outside the door. Another thing that Lister had noticed was a bruise on the dead man’s right cheek, a bruise caused when his face grazed the stump. Now, if death from pistol bullets occurred with a suddenness that caused the deceased to collapse and hit his face against the stump, where had the murderer stood? On the roof? An examination of the roof threw this theory out.. Dr. Poole had given the opinion that the deceased might have been shot lying down, judging by the angle of the death wounds.
