Recreation News The Recreation Dept. is trying to organize a Winter Carnival for 1974. There have been a couple of meetings held with the various clubs around town to par- ticipate in the carnival. So far not too much response has been forthcoming on what activities they are plan- ning as individual clubs. Here are some of the proposals suggested to date: a skate-a-rama, in the form of a costume parade on ice, to kick off the week's activities; games on the ice; skating and costume judging; as well, hot chocolate and hot dogs will be served to children up to 12 years. Arena association members free, non-members will pay a “nominal charge of 50¢ per child. So kids start making your costumes for this affair. Remember if your dues are not paid for the Arena please arrange to pay them up as soon as possible, they can be paid at the Rec Centre or the attendant at the rink. During the week, the Rod and Gun Club is planning to hold a snowshoe softball game at the ball diamond as well as displays to show the people of Cassiar what they have to offer in the line of shooting for recreation. Further details on this will be announced later on. Snowshoe races will be held around town and this has yet to be finalized as to the race area and compet- itors. As the clubs come up with their form of activity you will be kept informed by posters. It is hoped that the snowmobilers will come up with races to watch. Also that the curling club can work out some form of bonspiel or turkey draw for all residents that even non-members can participate in. The week will come to an end with the Lions Club Indoor Carnival Fund raising night held in the Rec Hall. The Yukon Cup skiing races on Sunday will mark the final race of the season for the Yukon Cup.. Saturday, March 9th the Girls Hockey team and the boys Bantam Hockey Team travelled to Watson Lake to play against the Watson Lake teams. ‘As this was the first game of the year for our girls team they put up a very commendable showing and lost by only 4 to 3. Top scorer for Cassiar was Miss Knowles with two goals followed by Miss Tischler with 1 goal. The Cassiar goal tender was outstanding for the whole game. It is hoped that more games can be arranged for the girls team. The Bantam boys also went down to defeat but lost by only 5 to 3, which, considering the change in ice size from regulation ice to a frozen bath tub that score was no indication that Cassiar was not the better team. In my estimation the Cassiar boys had by far the better team on the ice but due to the ice size they were over- passing and failing to shoot the puck soon enough: The Bantam team is a much improved team in the last little while and I am sure some of the credit must-go to Keith Colwille who has been putting them through their prac- ises lately and we hope this pays off if the boys travel to Whitehorse for the invitational tournament in April. For those interested enough to drop into the Arena and watch their boy play, the Minor Hockey groups have started their playoffs in the Pee Wee A and B divisions and believe it or not you could see some good hockey down there. | Mr. and Mrs. Frank McLean have donated a trophy to the Cassiar Senior Hockey league in honor and memory of their daughter Elizabeth who was killed in a hit and run accident in Kamloops last September. Elizabeth was a very ardent hetkey fan, particulary of the Kamloops Rockets of the B.C. Junior League. The trophy will be cently, one frustrated angler got The Cassiar Asbestos Sheet, March, 1974, Page 13 The Senior Hockey Club held a dance in the Rec. Hall to raise a little money to help offset some of their costs of uniforms etc. on order for the All Stars. Financially it was a success, but socially it was a bust. Steps will be taken to try and curb the rowdyism at future dances held in the Rec. Hall so that all the people attending can have a good time without having to take abuse from a few who figure a dance is a place to bother people and fight with them. no The pool room has been repaired and repainted and now looks like a decent place to pass a few hours of leisure time. I sincerely hope that in future those using the room will police it so that the persons damaging the equipment and the room can be dealt with in the proper way. Make your motto - USE BUT DO NOT ABUSE. When one visits such places as Watson Lake, Stewart etc. which are bigger commmities than ours, one begins to wonder why there is such vandalism in our Recreat- ional areas. We have an arena most small communities are crying for and-everytime I walk into ours I find some kind of damage, from doors being broken off the hinges, to the water valves being turned off or broken, and apparently all this damage is being done while others are around and yet no one reports who the cul- prit is so that steps can be taken to curtail the - damage. A bazaar was held in the Rec Hall by the Arena Association and it turned out a very great success, with this kind of co-operation perhaps we will see artificial ice in the rink in the not too distant future. Have had word from Victoria that our grant which the Lions Club asked for to remodel the Arena floor and the pool dressing rooms is being given careful consid- eration by technical and advisory committee of the Recreational Grants Dept. We will know by April Ist whether or not we are successful in our application for a grant. On Saturday, February 9th, the Rec Centre was alive and swinging as the Senior Hockey Associated hosted the Valentine's Dance. Pretty Miss Marie Anderson was chosen by the hockey players to be their Sweetheart Queen for the evening. As shown by the pictures a very surprised Queen she was. Many thanks to everyone who came and made the dance so successful. In this way it is felt that a player . who plays for the sport of playing, but who may not be up to the calibre of the high goal scorer stands a chance to win as well. So if you attend the games be sure to put your ballot in the box provided in the Arena Lounge.
