One of the Indians who happened to be present followed the trail of bent grass through the sage brush to a nearby clump of cottonwoods to a large log. He parted the underbrush and leaned over the log. His horrified gaze rested on the body of Bernard Duggan, lying parallel to, and shoved as far as possible under the log. Rushing back he brought the others and they rolled the log away. Duggan had been shot, his blood stained the dust-covered army jacket and overalls. Some of the men stayed to guard the body while others rode to the nearest phone and called Constable Gallagher at Williams Lake, some 15 miles away. It was about 95 miles from Quesnel to the scene, and we covered the ground as fast as the Ford and road conditions would permit. On arrival at the ranch we found that Gallagher and the coroner had arrived, and the body had been removed. Investigation indicated that the shooting had taken place in a corral. Duggan’s horse still stood there, saddled with the reins trailing. Enquiries at the Crosina store at the 153 Mile revealed that Happy Hawkins had come into the store early in the morning and had purchased a box of .38 revolver ammunition and some chocolate bars, after which he All Comrades Are Welcome At Branch No. 43 Canadian Legion, B.E.S.L. MILLING PRINCE GEORGE, BRITISH COLUMBIA had ridden off down the Cariboo Road. We knew he was not too familiar with the road South as he had come in by train and had not been far from the ranch during the time he worked there. We learned that Gallagher had collected a posse and headed South with the idea of overtaking Hawkins if he kept to the highway. We did not think he would attempt to cut across country as he did not know the short cuts. The various points along the road where there were government tele- graph stations were contacted, and the operators asked to be on the look-out for a man riding a buckskin horse. Atten sthe mchieie and sie" left the Donnelly ranch we continued down the road in the direction that Gallagher and the possee had taken, calling at the telegraph stations to see if there had been any news of the man we were after. Late in the afternoon we learned at the 127 Mile House that Gallagher had been there and had continued on. Just as we were leaving the operator came to the door and called us back to tell us he had just had a call from the 115 Mile House operator, who said that a man on a buckskin pony had just ridden by, headed South. We now were assured that we had not passed our quarry, so we had more confidence as we took up the pursuit again. At the 115 Mile House we talked to the operator, and learned that news had been sent to Gallagher. By now it was after midnight, and as we con- tinued on in the dark we peered ahead in our headlights’ beam for a horse- man. In front of us we knew there was the 111 Lane, so called because for several miles barbed wire fences were on either side of the road, at the South end of which were barns on both sides. We knew, if our man got into this lane he would have to keep going as there were no openings in the fences through which a horse could go. As we neared the end of the lane we saw, to one side of the road and as far from it as the fence would allow, a man standing by a buckskin horse.
