Its long yellow brown tail slashed back and forth in anger as it steadied itself on the high limb. Jimmy raised his .32 Special carbine to his shoulder sighting on the head. Just for a second he hesitated before the highpower rifle splintered the silence of the timber. The cat convulsed and sprung away from the tree. Down from the height it crashed, its limber body twisting frantically in the air as it fell. Pete made a spring for it before Jimmy could stop him. The cougar turned and tried to slink into the brush. Jimmy shot again, and the body of the cougar convulsed again as the shock of a high-power bullet hit it. Down it went among the short brush twitching and vomit- ing blood. Pete, furious after his long lone: wait with the killer, sprung on top of it snarling and slashing with his long fanged teeth. “Get him, Pete,” encouraged Jimmy, en- joying the sight. Reluctantly, he pulled the dog from the dying carcass, and as his hand came away from Pete’s chest a sickening feeling hit him in the stomach. Turning the dog gently around he lifted its head. Across the power- ful shoulder muscles, reaching deep into the chest cavity, the wicked slash of the killer cougar’s claws had ripped a terrible gash exposing the lungs and covering the dog with its own gore. Pete must have had to tackle the mountain lion on the ground before treeing it, as the cougar had not been able to claw the dog since the shooting. Immediately Jimmy set out for the near- est farmhouse, forgetting the freshly killed cougar in his worry over the wound re- ceived by Pete. Once at the settlement land- ing Jimmy hired a special launch to rush Pete to the Alert Bay hospital. To him there was nothing more precious than the life of his dog, for regardless of affection, the cougar hunter is only as good as his hounds—and Pete was one of his best. At the hospital, the doctor sewed up the wounds and spoke glumly. “That dog is lucky to be alive.” “Is he going to be all right, do you think?” asked Jimmy hopefully, genuine worry in his tone. “T think so. It will just be a matter of rest from now on.” “Thanks, doc,” said Jimmy thankfully. He returned to Malcolm Island for his kit. Ashore he met Mr. Turner, the farmer, who resided at Miller’s Bay near where he had killed the cougar. “That sure was a big cougar, Mr. Dewar. I heard your dog barking at him for a couple of hours before I heard you shoot it.” “You mean you heard him barking in one place for two hours?” asked Jimmy curiously.
