The glowing candles on the wreath symbolize the lighting of Christ’s way into the world. Germany is also the country where the custom of having a Christmas tree originated. It is traditionally decorated with candles and silver nuts. Queen Victoria intro- duced the custom of Dain a Christmas tree to England. In Sweden, the Christmas season lasts a whole month. It begins on December 13th, St. Lucia’s Day and ends on St. Knuts Day, January 13th. TARA KOMPERDO All I want is a Hobby oven and a doll. CHRISTMAS CUSTOMS In Spain the Festive Season is celebrated from 24th December until the 6th January. Christmas is celebrated on the night of the 24th to signify the time of Jesus’ birth. The Christmas supper begins around 11 pm with the family. At midnight they go to Mass and then return home with friends to continue supper until the early hours of the morning. The traditional supper commence with cardos, (a vegetable dish made from thistle stalks) served with an almond sauce. This is followed by turkey and afterwards different types of turén which are special Christmas pastries similar to marzipan. In Spain the christmas tree is not used at all. Each home has a Nativity scene to represent Christmas and the birth of Christ. The scenes are traditionally made of clay figures. Gifts are not exchanged on December 25th but are. given the 6th January to commemorate the Dia de los Reyes Magos (the day of the Wise Men) being guided by a star to bring gold , frankincense and Myrrh from the East. If the children have been bad during - that year they do not receive gifts but find a lump of coal in their shoe instead. FELIZ NAVIDAD Y PROSPERO ANO NUEVO On New Years Eve, Spanish people celebrate the coming of the New Year at Midnight, when all the lights go out. In Madrid, they stand under the main clock Tower which keeps the standard time for Spain. Throughout the country, people listen for the chimes of mid- night on their radio. Each person holds 12 grapes in their hand and when the clock strikes 12, they eat one grape at each toll. If they have eaten all the 12 grapes by the time the clock strikes 12 then they should have a Happy New Year. He comes on Christmas Eve dressed all in white and kisses the children in turn. He brings gifts of fruit and nuts. In Holland and Belgium, St. Nicholas comes on 6th of December. St. Nicholas was a bishop in the fourth century. He comes at the beginning of Advent to help the children prepare them- selves to welcome the birth of Christ. tai, CAD B.. The day before Christmas, fasting is observed all day. Then Midnight Mass begins with a pro- cession of four people, carrying torches, - parading around the church before entering to celebrate the Joyous Mass. Families, relatives and friends then end the fast with a great feast.
