Anything goes in a salad, and even for those vegetable-hating souls, there are plenty of over-meated salads to partake in. They are almost the perfect meal: super fast, easy to make, and completely affordable even with the finest of ingredients. Here is a recipe for one of the greatest, simplest sal- ads ever: PHOTO > WIKIMEDIA COMMONS Ingredients: (all portions subject to desire of final size) bo A type of leafy green (spinach, arugula, romaine, etc.) Le Figs! chopped . This salad makes you look like you know what you are doing with your life. by Darcie Smith Joyce Carol Oates Gets Creepy A Review of The Corn Maiden and Other Night- mares DARCIE SMITH ARTS EDITOR American author Joyce Carol Oates has always had a knack for being creepy, and in her latest The Corn Maiden and Other Nightmares, she capitalizes on it. The tales are not neces- sarily horror stories, however, there is something utterly horrific in their nature. It is less about frightening things that could happen and more about the frightening things that do happen, and the ordinary people who carry them out. There are seven stories in the collection, with The Corn Maiden being the first and longest. It tells the story of a young girl, Marissa, whom a classmate has abducted. The perspective shifts from the abductor to the teacher falsely accused and set up by the real abductor, and the young girl’s mother. Marissa was abducted by a disturbed classmate who plans on sacrificing her — a highly perverse thought for a girl who is no older then thirteen. Marissa is locked in a basement, drugged and naked while her mother balances on the edge of insanity over her whereabouts. The teacher is a bit too unconcerned with how he managed to get in the position of guilt. None of the stories are particularly fast-paced and they often do not read like a traditional short story. This collection is a bit more of an investment than most. The remaining stories are shorter and still creepy and strange. A few of the stories share the theme of false accusations and jealousy, and a few others revolve around the sibling relation- ship. Oates seems to be channeling a bit of Edgar Allen Poe in these tales and at times the reader might wonder just where all these ideas come from and how she thinks them up. The more one wonders where they came from, the creepier it seems. {TOU=4L00K WHAT | RENTED “FOR THE WEEKEND! :-P- - Dications ACROSS CANADAT | Call 1-8002 “327- 0/16 or visit?
