The citizens were busy sniping at the bank door whenever a head appeared and soon they began to run short of ammun- ition as, in their haste to get in on the action, few had thought to more than grab a gun and a handful of ammunition. PREACHER-VETERINARIAN DOES Goop * Work Behind the ore pile, the Rey. McLean’s stock was quickly exhausted and Tatchell, young and fleet of foot, was the obvious choice to run ammunition. Accordingly he made the crossing of “no-man’s land” and reached the store of Lynch Bros, which he discovered did not carry British .303 shells. However, a supply was located at Richmond’s. There were now three behind the ore pile so, after replenishing McLean’s am- munition supply, Tatchell joined others who were in the lane opposite the bank which would more directly cover the front door. Suddenly the front door of the bank was thrown open. Guns firing wildly in every direction, seven desperate, white- faced bandits jostled each other as they leaped from the doorway and attempted to race along the wooden sidewalk to the safety of the trees a hundred yards away. All hell seemed to have broken loose. Guns blazed from behind the ore pile and from almost every point of cover in a semicircle about the front of the Union Bank. One bandit slumped directly in front of the door. Almost at the same moment, another bandit staggered, ran feebly for about ten feet and pitched for- ward heavily on his face. Now it was a race. Suddenly another man went down to lie twisting feebly be- side the wooden sidewalk. A fourth bandit gave a sudden cry of anguish, staggered and then continued to run uncertainly to- wards the first trees. His companion, almost at his heels, slipped off the wooden walk as he tried to avoid the stumbling figure ahead of him and was last seen running as if his leg were injured. Two other bandits were directly behind the leading pair, both running with difficulty and now all four were inside the protective shadow of the trees. i Cautiously the fighting citizens of New Hazelton came out from behind the ore | pile and the building and, as a body moved towards the woods. As they marched down the road, they gave little more than a glance at the two forms that lay in front of the bank. Obviously these two bandits were dead. However, one of the three who had fallen here was very much alive.
