Page Eighty-eight dangerous for general use. If the quarry gets panicky, or attempts to fight the dog then there is considerable danger of the dog crippling or disfiguring him for life. Death may even ensue. In theory the dogs are trained to go for the right arm but even in training, protected by the “quarry arm” (a heavily padded sleeve) one has a hard time with most of these animals to keep them from going over or under the arm and grab- bing you by the throat. The R.C.M. Police dog section is thor- oughly organized and the dogs, after they have passed their tests, are enrolled in the force just like their masters. They are even given regimental numbers and have a per- sonal history sheet at Headquarters. The handlers (or dog masters) are recruited from the ranks by application and suitability tests. They are stationed at strategic points throughout Canada so that they can be taken to the scene of operations with .as little delay as possible. Each man is respon- sible for the welfare and training of his dog or dogs, receives an additional fifty cents a day as technical pay, and forty to fifty cents a day (depending on location) for feeding the dog. They are allowed the use of a car for transporting the dog to each assignment, and a careful record is kept of the perform- ance of each animal and his average of suc- cessful assignments. If the dog falls down repeatedly on the job then the dog trainer checks to find where the fault lies. Usually it isa case of the dog master not spending enough time with the dog to keep his four- footed comrade on the job. You can’t train a dog and then forget about him until he ts needed; he has to be constantly put through his paces. The dog master’s job is to work the dog every day. If a dog has been spoiled by lack of practice or faulty handling then he is put on a refresher course. If he fails to respond properly he is condemned. Naturally with a group of men such as we had at the dog school there were plenty of discussions about breeding and training and of course the question was bound to come up: “Which makes the best police dog — the German shepherd or the Dober- mann?” For genuine intelligence, speed and real adaptability the Dobermann is in a class by himself; but alas! there’s one fly in the ointment, he is too highly strung and tem- peramentally unstable. If you get one with- out these faults you have the best police dog in the world. But you can never be sure you have one, and just about the time you are convinced that yours is the exception, bingo! something happens to him and he’s out of control. It may be impossible to tell what caused the defection but when it does happen someone is liable to be nursing some nasty gashes. I know there are a lot of Dobermann admirers who will take violent exception to this statement, but the experi- ence of police dog schools supports me. It’s rather a shame that this fault shows up, for the Dobermann is the answer to the dog trainer's prayer. He just about trains him- self. A friend of mine who is a trainer in the U. S. Army’s K9 corps tells me the same story. Although the Dobermann is easier to train than the shepherd, they are accepting fewer and fewer of them. When they get up against some of the terrifying situations of actual combat, especially if conditions don’t jibe with what he has been taught to expect by his training, he is apt to go haywire completely. I have been asked if I can pass on a little practical information that would be of use to the man in the field where he is faced with a sudden call to assist in the search for a missing person. | When someone is lost the usual thing is for the relatives and neighbours to institute "Built on Quality” "Growing on Service” Member of Consolidated Grocers A Chain of Over 80 Stores D.
