Over The Edge UNBC’s Official Student Newspaper Volume 7 - Issue 9 January 22, 2001 Tired and Crabby since 1994 Winterfest Follies Clubs Compete for Cash (and Fun) By: Andrea Larson Over the past week clubs were invited to compete for fund and profit in the first annual Winterfest. The Northern Undergraduate Student Society (NUGSS) put on the event in which stu- dent clubs could compete. Some of the events featured during Winterfest included a team cheer, a modified ver- sion of Jeopardy and a talent show. Clubs were given points based on both their performance in each event and the number of club mem- bers who turned out to partic- ipate. Prizes of $500, $350 and $150 were awarded respectively to the teams that came in first, second and third. As only three clubs competed in the event (the UNBC sorority, Medieval Culture and Combat Club and the Political Science Student Association), all the clubs that participated ended up receiving prize money. After the initial few events the sorority and medieval club were within only a few hun- dred points of each other. The PSSA was trailed behind in a distant third after joining the competition late and missing several events. The race for first and second UNDER THE COVERS THIS WEEK came down to the perfor- mance in the talent show. First up was the Medieval Culture and Combat Club who had a two part talent involving a play and a song. The play was an abridged version of Beowulf narrated by Greg Whyte, with Greg Garbutt playing Beowulf and Mike Krysko playing the hideous monster Grendal. The improvised lines and wild fight scenes were met by unchecked laughter and gasps of delight. The play was then followed by a beau- tiful rendition of Danny Boy, sung by Nicole Tonn, who has been singing for many years and is an accomplished bard. Next up was the UNBC Sorority who lip-synced a hilarious version of “We Are Family”, a fitting song for the close knit group. Sarah Peterson strutted her stuff as the lead “singer” of the group in a wildly curly wig and blue feather boa, while singing into her microphone/hairbrush. The audience really got into this act, but marks were deducted for undue influence on the judges as Peterson got a little up close and personal with Oliver Ray, NUGSS President. Finally a member of the PSSA came to the stage and News Page 2 recited a_ soliloquy from Shakespeare’s “MacBeth’. It was remarked that “Nicole’s per- formance gave the Medieval Club bonus points” while the sorority “was a fun perfor- mance with no “butts” about it’. The final score for the sorori- ty was just over 10,000 points while the Medieval Club ae edged ahead of them in this competition with 12,000 points. The final score put the Medieval Culture and Combat Club in first place and were awarded $500, while the Sorority won $350 and the PSSA came away with $150. The only down- side to this fun and original Sound Scape Page 8 event was that so few clubs came out to participate.
