Over The Edge Page 16 Women’s Rugby Dominates the Okanagan Valley In True UNBC Fashion by Jessica Harcombe Who would have thought that women would be doing so well at a sport like rugby? Well, they are doing awesome and racking up the points on the road to Junior Varsity! The UNBC Womenis Rugby Team was down in the sunny Okanagan Valley this past week- end (November 13th and 14th) challenging the Kelowna Bohemians and the Kamladps Raiders in a muddy double-header. The first game was on Saturday, against Kelowna at the Apple Bowl. The rain was pouring down and the mud was getting thicker. The 10is game started with UNBCis star prop, Kristine Bock, scoring the first try. From this point forward the UNBC Womenis team domi- nated the field running through Kelownais back line. At the half, the score was 10-0 for UNBC, with the second try scored by _ rookie center Jessica Harcombe. The game was looking really good. The team was getting into it and putting every- thing they had into fin- ishing where theyid left off at the half. The sec- ond half began with a quick second try by Bock, closely followed by UBC all-star Tessa Trethewey is skilful try. Bringing the game to a confident final quarter. The UNBC Women were on fire, temperis were flaring and the scrums were getting rough. The game was nearing a finish when Peachland native Lia Thiesmann burst through the ruck and made a run from the UNBC 5 meter line to score the finishing try. The convert that fol- lowed Liais achieve- ment was a successful kick by Nora King. The game was won and the Last Week’s contest winners!! Sunday, November 14th, the rain had stopped and confidence was running _ high. Following a strong win against Kelowna, UNBC was out to finish the weekend with a second win against the Kamloops Raiders. Kamloops came without a full roster so Debbie Tainton, Jessica Harcombe and Cheryll Gilbert slid over to fill it up. The game was Qis and UNBC was thirsty Over The Edge would like to Thank Universal Music for the Generous donation of the contest prizes for another win. Once the first try was scored, by Lia Thiesmann, they couldn't bring them- selves to slow down. Try after try and convert after convert. With amazing speed and tal- = : ent, the team was com- ing together to pull it off again. The Kamloops Raiders didn't have a orts & Clubs chance at recovery. At the half, UNBC had one of their players back, Jessica Harcombe, leaving Tainton and Cheryll to help keep the balance up. A forceful break by Jayme Davidson left Kamloops wide open to have another try scored against them. By the November 30, 1999 end of the game the score was 64-7 for UNBC. The remaining points scored by speedy winger Nora King (4 tries and 4 converts) and Lia Thiesmann (a total of 5 tries and 3 converts). The only points Kamloops came away with were UNBCis own Debbie Tainton blasting through the ruck to try at the end line for Kamloops, fol- lowing that was a con- vert that gave Kamloops a small slice of the glory. The weekend was very successful for the UNBC Womenis Team, making this past week- end a very good way to continue on their streak of victory. The Women have three more games on the weekend of the 27th-28th down in Vancouver. Trinity Western University, UBC and SFU are next in line for the challenge. These Women are out to finish the semester right, with three more wins under their belt and a ton of experience playing together in true UNBC fashion.
