Scotty the Mail-stage driver entered
the room and sat between Monty and
Kelly, he watched a hand or two.
“Ab gude game,’ he remarked, “‘Gie
me a couple o’ stacks’ as he threw a
hundred dollar bill on the table.
Tony Marcini dealt a hand of stud-
poker. Nothing sensational happen-
ed, and Scotty won the first pot, act-
ing on an impulse fathered by an old
superstition, he immediately cashed
in, $20, the winner. “Whenever I
wun the first pot, it’s always the
last,’ he remarked. The outside door
opened suddenly and widely letting
in a good supply of fresh air, and in
burst Jerry Mulvihill, a hard boiled
sand hog from the Brooklyn Navy
Yards who had worked on every dan-
gerous job from the Atlantic to the
Pacific and, up and down the coasts,
widely known for his generosity and
recklessness with his money, for if
he couldn’t spend it he gave it away.

As Scotty vacated his chair, Jerry
slipped into it. He threw his roll on
the table. Kelly counted it, one hun-
dred and eighty-five dollars, how
many chips you want?. “‘Aw, gimme
the woiks,”’ the sand hog replied. The
game then got under way and Jerry
was holding his own. However, dur-
ing his last game Kelly hitched his
chair closer to the table as he gath-
ered up the deck to deal ‘Straight
Poker, and a five dollar ante.” Tex
skinned his hand and bet $10 on his
three sevens. Tony, with a four card
straight flush. Lee Yock called with
two pair. Mulvihill carefully skinned
his hand and found four nines. He
called and raised the bets $50. Monty
would not stand the raise and threw
in his hand. Kelly took another look
at his hand. He had three aces and
flashed them to Monty. then raised
Jerry $50. All laid down except
Jerry Mulvibill who stood the raise
and pushed in all his chins. Kelly
stacked them and matched them even-
ly. Monty threw his hand in and
gathered un the discard, flashing the
Joker to Kelly on top of it. Mulvi-
hill stood pat. Kelly pretended to
study his hand. “I’m taking one,
Jerry,’’ as he took the top card. It was
the Joker making him four aces. He
laid them down face up. ‘‘Beat them,
and the pot is yours, Jerry.’’

Jerry was drunk but roared, ‘“‘Hold
on, you stole that Joker from the
discard, the pot is mine.”

Kelly pulled the pot and threw
Jerry a blue chip, saying ‘“‘Go and buy
yourself a drink, you’ve been stealing
pots all night. Go home and sober
up and come back when you've got
some. money.” Further argument
took place and Kelly hit Jerry who
said “All right Bull Dog. I know
you're tough. I’m beat right now
