Each work bay must be left clean and dry after use and all parts and tools removed before another piece of equipment is brought in. Only approved slings and lifting tackle may be used. The use of “home made” or improperly made tackle is for- bidden. Mechanics and others are reminded that all equipment is brought to the shop for the purpose of repairs. Brakes may not work or steering may be defective, therefore, every care must be taken while moving it into the shop. - The wheels on all heavy equipment must be biscked while in the shop or parked in the yard area. While smoking is allowed in the shop, it is prohibited in the battery room, in proximity to inflammable material or gasoline operated vehicles. Where two persons are concerned with a piece of equipment that must be operated or moved to make ad- justment, every care shall be taken to see that each person has a clear understanding of what the other is going to do. MECHANICAL When welding or cutting near inflammable material, a suitable fire extinguisher must be kept at hand. Hammers, chisels, punches and other similar tools shall not be used if they have burrs or mushroomed heads. Such tools shall be properly tempered. Use the right tools for the job. No repair work on a machine or on machinery shall be attempted until the machine (or machinery) has been locked out of circuit in the approved manner. STOP machines before attempting to service them or carry out adjustments on them. The operator of a lathe, milling machine, shaper, bor- ing machine and drill press shall secure the work in place by chuck, dogs or hold down clamps of adequate size. Drills must be kept sharp. Keep your machine and place of work clean, remove metal cuttings with a wire brush, remove hazards from your immediate surroundings or if you are unable to re- move them yourself, report them, for correction, to your supervisor. Return all tools to their proper places. Horse-play on the job cannot be tolerated. 23
