Some- times they were crudely made by some local smith or other, “or beautifully made with dies highly ornamented, a piece of fine workmanship, bearing the initial or name of minister or congregation, a date of some event in the history of the church, and with the reverse side often blank, or bearing a text such as ‘Do this in remembrance of Me’ or ‘Let a man examine himself’.” The token, of course, was used to distinguish between communicants and non- communicants. In earlier times it served to distinguish between friend and foe. The several branches of the much-divided Church of Scotland took root in Canadian soil. The old-time Communion in Eastern Canada was a very solemn occasion in the life of a Church, a community or an individual. The week preceding was one of preparation. People came from far and near, arriving on Wednesday afternoon. Friendships were renewed, for Communion was held only once or twice a year. Thursday was a Fast day. Work was avoided, and solemn silence reigned. It was a day of humiliation, repentance, confession, forgiveness. Friday was known as “Men’s Day” or “Question Day.” Church services that day were devoted to heart searchings and exhortation. All hoped to be found worthy to approach the Lord’s Table on the Sabbath Day. At the close of this, or the service on Saturday, tokens were given by the minister to all who were to partake of Communion. Thanksgiving services were held on Monday. Thus we
