V7 2 ie oe DEVIN TOWNSEND Devin Townsend Terria Heavy Devy Records 2001 Devin Townsend, though very few may have knowl- edge of it, is a very highly revered and respected indi- vidual in the music communi- ty. He started his career at the beginning of the ‘90’s as the vocalist for Steve Vai; Devin was 19 at the time. He has since put out eight studio albums, five of which have been produced and engi- neered almost entirely by himself, under his own label (Hevy Devy Records). His most recent album came out Garbage Beautiful Garbage Universal 2001 Garbage in there new CD Beautiful attempted to dabble in the realm of pop music, less inventive lyrics more synthesizer bits, hoping to go into the selling market. There were a few songs | abhorred one song sounded like some thing l'd expect from Britney Spears, “Androgyny”; | could feel my brain seething from the lack of song writing skill repeating the same bits over and over and.... It also has a few different styles one was attempting a 50’s love break Over The Edge Page 6 | October 22, 2001 this year and is titled Devin Townsend: Terria. It is very unlike the body of music he created early in his career. His earlier credits are that of Strapping Young Lad, possi- bly the heaviest metal known to mankind, and quite unlike any metal that has come before or after. Alternatively, Terria can only be explained as music that is extremely heavy while not being metal or negative. The album is supposed to embody how the earth feels to Devin and this theme dic- tates the epic feel surround- ing every song, even the acoustic songs. Terria is song, “Can’t dry these tears” | also disliked. Thank heaven that | was forced to listen to the whole CD because from after the third track things seemed to pick up and | start- ed to enjoy it. Garbage has done some- things that were interesting with a synthesizer, not too much in terms of sounds that | haven’t heard before, but a good listen none the less. This album seems to be about variety; there are some slow songs, that would fall into the class of good make out songs as well a couple up-beat ones and ones that short of metal fanatics almost uplifting and proves that even the most hard-core metal head (Devin likes Judas Priest and !ron Maiden) can create music that progresses and takes off the tension. Terria is an excellent addition to the Devin collection and | hear there is a Strapping album on the horizon, so keep your ear to the ground. -Destrudo everyone could enjoy. This CD is not a bad listen; it got a bit mellower than ear- lier songs that gave them a break. If you like mainstream music and just want to expand your horizons by a half an inch or if you are a Garbage fan it would be worth giving a listen and it has the added bonus that it will not be likely to be played to death on Sh**’s FM. -Colleen wwTito* SIMPLE CREED * DEEP nates TARE jg Live tant has just taken place. It is apparent in listening to this album that they believe in what they are saying; they believe the sound they make drives their ideas into those who listen. However, Live does not seek converts; they seek to express their ideas to those who will listen in the hopes that the listener comes away feeling that something impor- experience’ in that everyone present felt a kinship with those around them; they believed in Live and they believed in their fellow man.
