Corrigan CONTAMINATION OF ASBESTOS A peculiar feature of the Crys- talline Mineral called Crysotile As- bestos is that its diameter is so small in relation to its length that its spinning properties are similar to those of organic textile fibre. As far back as B.C. 436, the Greek Sculptor Callimus used an asbes- tos wick in a golden lamp which he made for the Temple of Pallas Athene, where it was to be kept perpetually alight. The story of Marco Polo's thir- teenth century travels mentions a fire resistant material, which he believed to be made from the skin of Salamander, ~ but which proved to be Asbestos. Prior to the commencement of com- mercial mining of Asbestos ore in Quebec, a hundred years ago, the early habitants also used asbestos thread for knitting stockings which were cleaned by throwing them into a roaring fire. These examples show the endurable nature of Asbestos. Today, Asbestos is indispensable for our Industrial economy. It is primarily used for Electrical Insu- lation, Mechanical Packing, Safety Clothing and as Friction and Rein- forcing materials. . Age, Fire and Corrosion cannot destroy Asbestos but, it can become useless by contamination. Contaminants such as - wood, paper, wire, grease, etc. are insep- arable from Asbestos and they destroy its usefulness for Electrical Insu- lation, as an example. PLEASE...
