crowded facilities and the need for a new school, they
should visit the Arts Centre. We have lost approximately
20 students over the summer, but in ‘the last 3 weeks we
S have gained 49, which puts the enrolment at 323, four
more students than at any time last year. The executive of

& the Aurora Arts Centre, and Mr. Walter Comper i in partic-
ular, are to be thanked for helping us once again in provid-
ing the much-needed space.

‘School Facelift

‘The long-awaited fence is now up in front of a
freshly painted school. Hopefully, the fence will keep
the students a little safer while at school, and keep them
from spilling out into Malozemoff, in front of the traffic.
The fence, and the posted speed signs, might also remind
the occasional speedy driver to please slow down, as
there are many little bodies on their way to and from
school these days,.and we don’t want to lose any. Drive
carefully!

Another indication of how busy the District Maint-
enance staff have been is the new roof over the trailer

_ section of the school. This should keep the students a lit-
_ tle more protected from the rain, snow and buckets in

the middle of classroom floors.

New Programme

Two Grade 12 students, Fred Hudson and Frank
Dennis, are the first students from the school to be part-
icipating in a very unique programme. They will be at-
tending school on a “part-time” basis in order to com-
plete their necessary graduation requirements, and are al-
so beginning a pre-apprenticeship programme with Cas-
siar Resources in heavy duty mechanics. As a result of
this, these two students have the opportunity to com-
plete their pre-apprenticeship training and graduation re-
quirements in the same year. Thanks must go to Cassiar
Resources for their assistance in providing this pro-
gramme for local students. Special thanks go to Mr. Roy
Clements and Mr. Wayne Geisbrecht, who initially co-
ordinated the programme between Cassiar Resources and
the school, in their respective areas. We wish the stu-
dents every success in this excellent opportunity.

B.C. Sports Draw

Within a week ort ‘two, the school will be promoting
the annual B.C. Schools Sports Draw, which is the major
provincial fund-raising venture for school sports activ-
ities. Through this draw, at least 50% of the money rais-
ed goes directly back to the school involved in the draw,
and the other 50% goes to the provincial sports govern-
ing body, B.C. School Sports who, in turn, use that
money to provide assistance to many athletes through-
out B.C. schools. Cassiar’s direct benefits of this draw
last year took many forms:

1) Students from Cassiar who participated in the Prov-
incial Cross-Country Championships, and regional
Curling play-offs, had their travel subsidized by B.C.
School Sports

2) Three Cassiar students, Jayne Clements, Connie
.Quash and Barb Billingsley were selected to partic-

ipate in a one-week sports development camp during |

the summer, in basketball and curling , with all ex-
penses paid

In actual fact, Cassiar students benefitted per capita
more than most students in the province as a result of
this draw. This is one “ticket sales” draw where the dir-
ect results can be seen in the community, so please sup-
port the students in this draw. There are some excellent
prizes, and tickets are only $1.00 each.

Clearing the Site
The clearance of the site for the new elementary school

has started on schedule, with work going on during all day-
light hours. This gives more hope to the contractor’s pro-
mise that the school will be ready for next September.
The present plan is for work to continue as long as pos-
sible before the snow.comes, and to begin again as soon as
is possible in the spring. Although the present weather is
not too promising — we are all hoping that the snow will
come later than ever this year. We will try to keep you up-
dated on the the progress of the new school.

Secondary Hours Changes

In accordance with the School Act, secondary stud-
ents are now attending school a little earlier in the morn-
ing, and leaving a little later in the afternoon. This now
gives the secondary students the same amount of time at
school as any other secondary students in B.C. The new
starting and finishing times are as follows:

8:45 a.m. Secondary starting time (i.e. in
class, ready to begin)
8:55 a.m. Elementary starting time

- 10:45—11:00a.m. Elementary recess
12:00 — 12: 65 p.m. a lermentany and Secondary, Lunch |
time.

No, the extra trailer you noticed on the schoole
grounds on the week of Sept. 13-20th was not AGS
classroom (although we could certainly make use of it).

It was the Emily Carr School of Art “Outreach” Print: es

mobile, which the school attempted to use as much as
possible, within the limits of time and space, to the ben-35
_ efit of the students:during the time it was in town: Thee
instructors conducted an initial workshop session for the =
elementary staff, and many secondary and elementary 24
students were able to use the Printmobile to create their ™
own prints, and demonstrate their creative talents in this 2
area.

First School Board for S.D. 8 87

Voters in the Stikine will elect the first Board of School

Notes re the election of the Board of School Trustees for
School District 87 (Stikine).

1. The election of the trustee/s for each of the member

areas Cassiar (2), Atlin (1), Dease Lake (1), Telegraph

Creek (1), Good Hope Lake (1), Lower Post (1) shall
be held at an annual meeting of the persons resident

in the school attendance zone. This meeting shall be ©

. held not earlier than October 1st and not later than
November 14th.

2. At the first election (1981) one trustee from Cassiar
and the trustees from Atlin, Lower Post and Tele-
graph Creek will be elected for two years. The other
trustee from Cassiar and the trustees from Dease Lake
and Good Hope Lake will be elected for one year.

Thenceforth, all trustees will be elected for two years. _

3. In order to be eligible to vote in trustee elections, a
person must satisfy the following basic qualifica-
tions-

(a) be 19 years of age or older at time of voting

{b) be a Canadian citizen or British subject

(c) have been a resident of Canada for a minimum of
12 months

(d) have been a resident of British Columbia for a
minimum of six months

(e) have been a resident of the rural area for a min-
imum of three months.

Qualifications of candidates:

A person who is on any municipal, regional, district

or rural area’s voting list in British Columbia is

eligible to be nominated and elected and to hold
office as school trustee in any school district or dist-
ricts in the province. This means, for example, that a

resident of Fort Nelson who is on the voters’ list.

two nominators were on a voters’ list for Stikine and
the candidate received. enough votes. Indeed, this
same person could also be a trustee in Squamish, or
anywhere else in the province, at the same time. A
person cannot be nominated, elected or hold office as
trustee, however, for mofe than one voting area with-

in a school district - in other words, be two trustees:

in one district. ‘
There are certain disqualifications for a candidate
however:

(a) he/she cannot eannee bean employee of the school board .

for that school district; this includes part-time em-
ployees and substitute teachers.

(b) he/she cannot have any contract with the board
or any interest in a contract with the board. ;

(c) he/she cannot- receive any payment over $1,000
from the board during the current calendar yegr,
other than trustee indemnity and expenses.

(d) he/she cannot have been convicted of an in-
dictable offense, or, if so convicted, he/she must
have been pardoned or the sentence served.

-(e) he/she cannot be bankrupt or insane.

(f) Also,..a trustee may be a shareholder i ina company
which does business with. the board, provided the
trustee does not vote on any question relevant to the
business — for example, a garage may hold the con- _
tract for maintenance and repair of schoo! buses if
the garage is an incorporated company and the sole
shareholders are a trustee and spouse, provided the -
trustee does not vote on any matter concerning
school bus repairs or maintenance.

6. Nominations for School Board.

A candidate for election as trustee must be nom-

inated in writing by two electors whose names appear ~

on any local list of voters within the school district :

‘where the election is at large, or on the local voters’:

‘list within the municipality or rural area in which the
candidate is running where the election is on an area

representation basis. The -form of the nomination
paper and candidate’s declaration is contained in

Sections 96 and 97 of the Municipal Act and Section

35(eliv) SA. Copies of the nomination form will be
available from the School District 87 Administration
Office.
