Of this total, 40,900 deaths were caused by motor vehicles. The leading cause of accidents was excessive speed. | This danger is not confined to the U.S.A. It applies most emphatically right here and especially now with fine weather and dry roads. Excessive speed should not be assessed exclusively in terms of miles per hour. This jis the chief criterion for the plantsite and townsite, and some drivers persistently ignore the regulations here. The people are reminded that they are liable to summz conviction upon apprehension. However, on the mine roads and mine areas the criterion is to choose a speed which ensures having the vehicle under safe controf at all times. If the speed chosen on the switchbacks, for example, is such that only brakes will jbring the unit under control at the © corners, then brakes are depended upon as jthe last resort--a desperation measure. | What happens if the brakes fail? The jdesperation measure is instantly followed by the point of no return. Good drivers choose the proper gears for juse downhill just as carefully as they choose the proper gears for use up hill. i Colour al batetiene Marre ee, Yul Brynner Scope Deborah Kerr Colour Tony Curtis | Debbie Reynolds Colour Peter Palmer Julie Newmar Colour Cornell Wilde Donna Reed — Colour Vincent Price John Kerr B&W Bob Monkhouse Leslie Philips Colour Elivis Presley 1:00, 7:00, 9:00 PM. These are a few common sense precautions of which there has been too much disregard recently. Supervisors are reminded that their example is of critical importance. Be sure and set a good example. C.
