Page 3 NEWS & HAPPENINGS TO THE RESIDENTS OF MID-CANADA and the ARCTIC. THE MID-CANADA DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION, INC. intends to submit a brief to the Federal Government concerning the Benson White Paper on Taxation and the new Credit Restrictions. Among other things the brief will deal with the need for incentive income tax provisions for residents of the North (Mid-Canada and the Arctic.) The foundation requests the views of the readers of this newspaper on the following questions: 1. Are residents of Mid-Canada and the Arctic penalized by way of cost of living, income taxes, transportation and other costs? 2. Should special income tax policies and provisions apply to residents of Mid-Canada and the Arctic to equalize their opportunities with the residents of Canada South; and/or should residents of Mid- Canada and the Arctic not only be equalized but as well be given income tax incentives. What should these incentives be? 3. Should the residents of Mid-Canada and the Arctic be exempt from the new credit restrictions imposed by the Federal Government? 4, What specific incentives should be considered for small businesses, secondary industries, and service industries in Mid-Canada and the Arctic? Submissions should be sent to: Mid-Canada Development Foundation Inc., General Delivery, Inuvik, N. W. T. (This message is printed as a public service by this newspaper. ) CASSIAR-STEWART ROAD We have been sent a copy of a letter and a map by Frank Calder, M.L.A., Atlin. We quote part of Mr. Calder's letter to Mayor Ian McLeod, Stewart, B.C. QUOTE - "With reference to the interview, the Minister informed me that a quarter of a million dollar glu-lem bridge will be constructed this year over the Nass River at the south-east end of Meziadin Lake. The completion of this bridge will provide access between Stewart and Terrace (Highway 16) and when the remaining 25 mile gap between Ningunsaw and North Bell Irving is completed, the bridge will provide access between the state of Alaska and the state of Washington" END QUOTE. And of course, with Lil’ Old Canada in between. The map sent to us indicates that the road does not go direct to Stewart but to Terrace. The Stewart road will turn off some miles east of Stewart, near Meziadin Lake. Of interest to all of us is that the Highway Dept.' survey crews have been noted working on the Cassiar Road in the section 2 or 3 miles south of French Creek through to the Blue River. The impression we have is that work will be done in that area this summer. OPERATION - BLUE RIVER BRIDGE 10 G.I.C. (atco) houses, half a unit per load, 20 loads, bridge not wide enough to allow passage. PROBLEM: SOLUTION: Raise bridge deck 19 inches to allow clearance over railings. Allow 2 days - 1 - prepare, pre-assemble (and don't forget anything ... you're 67 miles from Cassiar). 2 - close the road for 8 hours to complete the job. PROGRAM: The general program was laid on by Lothar Tischler, Foreman of the Surface Dept., who had the full co- operation of the B.C. Highway Dept. Lothar chose a “crack team" made up of Morris Bisson to lead, with Lennox Quash, Wayne Arnold and Valdimar Isidore. They started at 9:00 a.m. and did they finish on t time??? THEY SURE DID --- at 3:15 p.m. the first vehicle, driven by Frank Stewart, with 2 horses aboard, Completed. drove across and, - at 4:30 p.m.? "Ho Hum, let's go home".
