SAUDER hool of Business gq We THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA RE:“Why don't we all just get stoned, get drunk and...?” Dear Over the Edge, In response to Everald Creary’s letter,“Why don't we all just get stoned, get drunk and...?, I have a few comments. First of all, the author asks whether saying that ‘homosexuality is a sin’ should or would be considered a ‘hate crime. As Section 319, part 3 (b) mentions there is defenses for the use of terms that could be defined as a hate crime, “if, in good faith, he expressed or attempted to establish by argument an opinion on a religious subject’, In which case, his opinion that homosexuality is a sin is not a criminal offense. My question is more broad, in that why the author chose to pinpoint homosexuality, among other sins, as being particularly horrendous. Why not divorce? It is expressly forbidden to divorce, except in the case of adultery, according to 1 Corinthians 7:11, However, picking which rules we choose to abide by in the Bible is not my main issue. As a queer Christian follower, and having many close friends who are LGBTQ, I am saddened by the persistent belief by many that we cannot be part of God’s chosen people. It is a tragedy that a person may be barred from being permitted to fully worship God or be a part of a community of faith because of their sexual orientation, Indeed, I found myself intensely questioning the logic that our Christian God could be so accepting of all people who profess a faith in Jesus Christ, and then expect them to give up a full, complete, and dare I say, holy life within a homosexual relationship? Thankfully, I have found an accepting place within the United Church, where all people are accepted for who they are. And I believe, that “Whether we live or die, it must be for God, rather than for ourselves. Whether we live or die, it must be for the Lord. Alive or dead, we still belong to the Lord. This is because Christ died and rose to life, so that he would be the Lord of the dead and of the living. Why do you criticize other followers of the Lord? Why do you look down on them? The day is coming when God will judge all of us. In the Scriptures God says,‘I swear by my very life that everyone will kneel down and praise my name!’ And so, each of us must give an account to God for what we do,” (Romans 14;7-12) Margaux Schilling Opinion 7 5 Things I'm in Love with this Week Stephanie McCullough - Columnist/Managing Editor Hey Everyone, So, doesn't it just seem like last week when I got to rant about crap that I care about? Guess what, we are published bi-weekly so my heading is potentially incorrect, Anyway, onto the goods. This weekend I watched sev- eral episodes of Breaking Bad. Saweeeet show with absolutely splendid actors. It seems Iam turning into an old man who only watches the AMC channel. BUT I've seen the Jeep Wrangler advertisements on there complete with young, attractive women so I can't be the only 20-something female watching AMC. Yay targeted advertising, how I love thee. 1 - Zip.ca. Zip is an online movie rental service. You go through the multitudes of movies and make a list based on what you want to receive next. It isn't perfect so I’ve been waiting for Layer Cake for quite a while now but it'll happen, I know it will. This site is easy, truly the lowest maintenance rental option ever. I have to find a postbox, which There are so many different types of people, with different traits and characteristics, Are there a certain couple of characteristics that are most successful in making a happily ever after relationship? You often hear that op- posites attract, but that’s not to say that those with opposite personalities make relation- ships work. Nor does that mean that like per- sonalities or characteristics work either. A needy individual always needs to be with someone and/or reassured of acceptance. One who is desperate will overlook and en- dure just about any type of treatment just to have someone. Independence may show detachment and wanting to live alone, yet being in a relation- ship. A controlling individual always feels the need to be in charge of every situation. can be difficult, but they don't get mad when I am taking too long plus they want you to receive movies faster so you have the oppor- tunity to get refilled often. In summary, I will eventually be able to watch every movie I've ever wanted to see, that’s amazing! 2 — Good Coffee. As in I hate piss water with coffee mate and sugar. 3 — 3D movies, I just recently learnt that they are refilming the next James Bond in 3D. I really think that this something we should expect for pretty much every movie in the next couple of years. This is a trend, and I can't wait to see it take over, Avatar was great, totally worth watching, I must admit I freaked out a little bit in the beginning because it was all, you know, 3D and it was super exciting which makes me REALLY ex- cited, But yes, go see it, bring a date and sport those glasses with pride. They are, much to my surprise and contented astonishment, not the blue/red cardboard ones. They look like Who Fits? Negativity and aggressive behaviour dem- onstrate that of an abusive partner (including verbal). Submissive partners always apologize, yield- ing to make the other happy. A compassionate partner feels sympathy or pity under most circumstances. A supportive individual is always helpful, caring, encouraging, understanding, reassur- ing, and sometimes sympathetic. Sacrificial partners always put the others desires and needs first. Those in denial ignore the obvious while excusing or avoiding issues with the fear of accepting what cannot be changed. Many people identify with several charac- teristics and traits. Once you've determined and accepted which type of partner you are, then you may be able to recognize who you really cheap Ray-Bans (but are not to be used to block the sun, just so you know.) 4 — Matt Nathanson. His new CD, Some Mad Hope, is the shit. I also suggest When Everything Meant Everything as it has some good songs. It’s really nice background music... think studying, chilling, dinner plans, that kind of thing. 5 — Hobbies. Well the real truth here is the fact that I think the idea of Hobbies is superb but I haven't selected one. I am taking sugges- tions, please email over-the-edge@unbe.ca if you have an idea for me. I personally believe that hobbies are a waste of time and money but I'm wrong, I'd like something not terribly messy/space-consuming, not difficult, as well as possibly something to be done in groups or pairs. My roommate paints figurines for Warhammer and he seems pretty stress-free, except I probably shouldn't have shared that. Don't tell him I said anything, Kali Flick - Columnist/General Office Assistant are in your current relationship. Now in try- ing to figure out myself and my compatible partner... I'm curious; does Mr. Right mean no more silly little arguments? Smooth sailing from here on out? Or is the occasional head bumping healthy? What is the line between bumping heads and excessive fighting? There are collisions no matter what, even in the “perfect” relationship. Differences are not a bad thing as it adds colour and spontaneity in what could become a too-composed relation- ship. Perhaps you think that to collide with your partner only causes indifference. This is partially correct in my mind, but there is the saying, “what is peace without war?” Keep in mind how fun it is to make up each time. So where is the proper balance for a hap- pily ever after relationship? I’m not sure; I’m still trying to find that out myself. Maple Syrup News The news that lacks credibility and style Haakon Sullivan - Columnist/Production Coordinator The video game world suffered a large blow as the Union of Digitally Created Characters (UDCC) has gone on a wildcat strike postponing the releases of highly an- ticipated titles such as Mass Effect 2 and Star Trek Online. “We just want to be treated more fairly” said UDCC President Miles Edgeworth at a re- cent press conference. “Game companies such as Electronic Arts, Nintendo, and Ubisoft are treating us like third class citizens, It is un- fortunate that it came to this but we will be better off after our demands are met.” The UDCC argues that they have been forced to work for much longer than what is deemed acceptable. Their most famous member, one known only as “Mario’, has been working for almost 30 years and as retire- ment age approaches there is no end in sight for the series. “T'm just so tired.” Mario said at the press conference. “I’ve had barrels thrown at me. I've jumped on Goombas. I've been to space. I want to slow down and relax but those execu- tives at Nintendo keep on forcing me to work my old bones in some zany situation, I need to stop before I become another Sonic or Me- gaman.” Mario was referring to the case where over the number of years Sonic has been in over thirty games in the last twenty years and has began to suffer from severe muscle aches and chronic memory loss. His friends and associ- ates are reporting that he has begun to con- stantly hum terrible pop songs. The case with Megaman is more complex. The star of many games and franchises suddenly disappeared but rumours are that he got hooked on high acid batteries dealt by the Energizer Bunny. Their pay is also far under that of others in the entertainment industry,“I star in a few hit games that smash entertainment records, and all they send me is a fruit basket!” shouted the Master Chief from the progressively more disgruntled crowd. “I complained to human resources and they all gave me raspberries right back.’ When we went to Electronic Arts for a comment, they issued this statement: “We take great pride in our games and our profits, and rest assured we will promptly find a solu- tion to this situation that will keep our profits Attention! intact, Unfortunately, because of the recession and the need of new yachts for the executives, we will be unable to meet their demands as stated. Besides, who gives a ****? Where would they be without us? If they leave we will just get our characters from South Korea and China for a better price.’ Shortly after this statement they issued a press release for a new game called “Goreo” which has the player save the town of Seoul from an unnamed communist threat. Games- pot, IGN, and other gaming communities quickly responded that they look forward to having a change in the gaming industry and having something better to do than play ball-and-cup or tiddlywinks while this strike endures. When questioned about this new game Kratos quickly leaped up and roared, “Those scabs wont live to see the light of day!” The rest of the room nodded in agreement. Something else happened but this reporter left soon after to play Goreo and blast com- mies with a flamethrower. Who knew having a game based in South Korea would be so damn cool?
