grin. After biting a few chunks out of his
desk, he suggested that I give him a hand
to search the army of prisoners and list their
property. The first one up to the desk
happened to be the ringleader. Something
in the towering stature and fierce stare of
the Irish limb of the law did things to the
aborigine. He shed his bravado faster than
a rooster sheds his feathers in a Texas
twister. He decided to pay his fine, and
advised his followers to do likewise. They
departed under a shower of Irish blessings,
and Anderson grabbed his bucksaw and
went down to the sandspit to saw more
driftwood, whilst the roar of the breakers
and the screeching of the gulls lulled his
turbulent Erse spirits.

Yes, it was a wild coast, splattered with
the hulks and spars of wrecks from the
seven seas. Anderson told me of a Spanish
wreck on the long hard beach betwixt
Clayoquot and Tofino. The top deck had
been burned, but the rest was sound, and
alternately buried and partly revealed, by
the tide and the ever-shifting sand. I still
have a hand-made brass spike, pulled from
her teakwood hull. Anderson was sure she
was chock full of treasure trove, and longed
to erect a barricade to keep out the sand
whilst he excavated the jewels and doub-
loons he pictured stowed in her hold. I
afterwards met a chap who farmed near
that beach and he had an ornate sword left
by the captain of the wrecked barque, who
had miraculously reached shore through a
howling storm, clad only in his scanties, or
whatever it was that Spanish captains slept
in.

Salt chuck, placid lakes, turbulent in-
terior rivers, all get their share of B.C.
Police patrolling in the never-ending quest
for the unjust, who delight in fleeing to
supposedly inaccessible spots in the various
hind-ends of nowhere. I mentioned Cecil
Muirhead in a previous article, and I would
like to know where he is now. In the old
days, before a separate administration was
set up, the game laws were administered by
the police. I made two trips with Muir-
head, from Summit Lake, 20 miles north of
Prince George, and which is the head-
waters of the vast MacKenzie river system
of Arctic waterway, past Finlay Forks, up
the roaring Finlay River, beyond Fort
Graham, to the Ingenika Canyon. It was
my first experience of poling and frogging
a boat. “Frogging” consists of getting out of
the boat into the cool inviting (?) river,
and lugging the heavy boat and contents
over sand and gravel bars, known to the
initiated as “rifles”. At times, by way of
