Page 4 February 1982 Cassiar Courier Erickson GC reek Column : by Pat Beaton Deep winter....When the frost grows on the inside of the windows and the skiis and snow- shoes sit by the door waiting for a break in the ‘cold weather; when half the north’s population heads for Hawaii and the other half prays their pipes won’t freeze and their trucks will start; when card games abound and gourmet cooks practice their art; when Moms fight cabin fever and Dads wish they could stay home from work (just today — it’s too cold)... This is Erickson’s 4th winter of operation and we are better prepared than ever for the cold this year. Yet there’s nothing one can do to pre- pare a miner who has been working in water all day for that moment when he arrives wet from underground and meets the frigid air on surface. And it’s still pretty cold for crushermen Mark Bondesen and Gunther Kriebig when they have to climb onto the outside of the grizzly and break up rocks too big to go into the mill. Then there’s acting Surface Foreman Charlie Devine who thawed my propane line at 40 below while his mustache turned white with frost. Good hu- mor helps to fight the cold — just ask Charlie! Congratulations this month to June and Mike Smith on the birth of their first child, a son, Christopher Hawkins Hylarides-Smith, born on December 2nd at Cassiar. Christopher weighed in at 7 pounds 2 ounces. Goodbye to Ralph McGreevy, our mine sur- veyor, who has moved on to the Caddelac Mine as their mining engineer. Welcome back to Mike Caton and Carol Whiteside. Mike placed third re- cently in his class of first year electrician appren- tices in Vancouver. Good work, Mike. And Bon Voyage to Jan and Norman Day. They are off to Australia on the trip they won last year at the Curling Club Bonspiel Banquet. In other news, insiders tell me the lunch thieves at the 28 Portal are back...a pair of mar- ten have been living in the miners’ Doghouse and raiding their lunches. The beautiful couple are be- coming quite tame and fat as the miners feed them every day. Anyone would become tame and fat in this cold! I hope it’s warmer next month.... GIRL GUIDES by Liz Maguire Since last month’s article, there were no Guide meetings over the Xmas and New Year period. How- ever, our last two meetings, just to give you a record of them, were ° 1. used to make a little decoration for each girl's Xmas tree. Mrs. Giles gave the girls lots of nice ideas which they could try out for themselves an- other time, perhaps at home. They could also keep those ideas in mind for future occasions which may arise when the girls have to think of ideas for gifts, bazaars, etc. 2. We spent another night making Xmas cards for the District Commissioner, Mrs. Carin; Mrs. Smith, a trainer from Fort Nelson who had visited us earlier in the year, and one for Mrs. Giles, who was out of town for Xmas. ; During this period an idea was forming in the minds of two of the girls, Celenka and Chery!, whereby they could display their baking skills and, at the same time, complete Part 6 of the Community Section of Pathway 2 of the Adventure Challenge. This stated that they had to do a good turn on their own (or with the help of a group of friends--who better than their fellow ° Guides!), thus providing help in their own community. They decided that their own community here in Cas- siar was pretty fortunate and that it would be a good idea, in that case, to send the money raised to some group which was more in need. They decided on the Lions Easter Seal Appeal, after remembering the Tele- thon which had taken place a week or so before. So these two Guides set about organizing their Bake Sale. They obtained Mr. Lanphear’s permission to hold it at the school; they decided what they would bake and invited the help of the other Guides, who wilk ingly donated their goodies too; they discussed how they ‘would handle the money and the float which would be required and the setting up of the “stall”. So after a few broken nights’ sleep, on Tuesday, December _ 15 the bake sale was held and an amount of $35.43 was raised! | think Cheryl and Celenka are really deserving of praise in carrying out this venture completely without any adult supervision and | say ‘’Very well done, girls!’’ Thank you also to the other Guides who helped out with baking goodies and | know Celenka and Cheryl were very grateful for your support. | think on this oc- casion, all the Guides could say that they certainly ob- served the third Guide Law which is ‘‘A Guide is useful and helps others.’ We look forward to our meetings in 1982, which should be well poder way, pies ac time Vgu read this article. - | All Saints Le oe Community Church Rector: The Rev'd Bil! The girls finished making their Xmas wreaths and excitedly hung Xmas chocolates on them in place of balls. After cookies and juice, each girl had to “earn’’ her right to choose a Christmas present by doing a good turn, reciting the Brownie promise or telling us of Brownie deeds. At the end of the meeting each girl felt as though she had just been to a party but also she remembered her status as a Brownie. Now the Brownies are anxious to get back to their pro- grams as the three Tweenies, Rachel Laurie, Sherri Zebroff and Stephanie Slana prepare to be enrolled as Brownies on February 13. Parents -- please note that this is a Saturday. There will be no Brownies on Feb. 10th because the Rec Centre will be closed that day. Many of the girls are now being encouraged to work on ‘a number of badges. Congratulations to Melissa Lecours, who received her Homemaker’s Badge. If parents have any Questions about badges for their daughters to work on they should contact Me: Ethorn, Badge Soin Phone 778-7452.. We_ now have 15 girls in Brownies and would extend a welcome to any girls 6 to 9 years old who would like to join us on Wednesdays «from 6 - 7:30 p.m.-in the Upper Leisure Room at the Rec Centre.
