Aston on the steamer “Okanagan” marched down to the nearest steamer landing. Once again James and Wilson stepped aboard the Okanagan, again as prisoners. But this time attempted murder was added to James’ list of crimes against society. And this time they were bound to the mast with stout lashings furnished by the ship’s crew. When the lake steamer arrived at Kelowna on Wednesday, March 20th, word of the fugitives’ arrest had already spread like wildfire and the landing stage was jam packed with interested spectators. He had merely fallen into company with James when the latter headed for Penticton after the holdup. Wilson, how- ever, eye-witness to the shooting on the Okanagan gave valuable evidence when James was charged with the more serious crime of attempted murder. He was also committed on the charge of armed robbery. Meantime, Const. Aston, victim of the treacherous attack lingered for 10 days between life and death. He passed away on March 28th and a few days later Boyd James was charged with wilful murder. Committed for trial he was escorted to the Left centre: Chater & Taylor's store at South Kelowna. The Bellevue Hotel can be seen to the right. Still in business, the store, now enlarged, is operated by Mrs. Hall. The Bellevue Hotel is now operated by Mr. J. Farris. with escaping from custody. Mr. R. B. Kerr appeared for the Crown. Previously it had been thought that Wilson was James’ accomplice in the store robbery at Kelowna, but he was able to prove that he had no complicity in the Kamloops Gaol to await the May assize at Vernon.
