Dear Sir:- A short time ago I was given a type- written copy of a poem, that was supposed to have been written by Edgar A. Guest called TWO JOBS. A copy is enclosed. To me it seemed a little smug, as it put all the responsibility on the son, so pre- pared an answer to this piece which 1s also enclosed. Yours very sincerely, Vo Jo Tl. Seeman TWO JOBS “So you've finished with school, my boy!” said he, “Eighteen years old, and bright as can be. Well, just for a moment, now listen to ” “You're starting out in the world my son, Eager and clean and true, But here is a thought to dwell upon: There are just two jobs for you. And now you must make up your mind which one Of them you will choose to do. “One calls for eight hours’ work each day And weary will you he, But it will give you some time for play, Your sweetheart you may see, And many an evening you may stay With your mother and with me. “And when that day of labor ends And homeward you have turned, You may walk the streets with your laughing friends By no one scorned or spurned, And be proud that you are a man who spends Only what he has earned. “Now the other job pays no such rate Of wages. Think this o'er! Who choose the laws to violate On a cold and cheerless floor Will work his life out for the state Behind a bolted door. ‘Never a friend will find his place And never a joy be had, Never he'll look on his sweetheart’s face, And never an hour be glad, And never an evening he'll speak a grace With his mother and his dad. “That's all, and now for your own soul's sake, Think it all out ere the choice you make, Which job of the two is the one to take.’’ By Epcar A. Guest. JOBS A Reply to “TWO JOBS” Yes, Dad, I am eighteen years of age, Ready to start, to earn a wage. Two jobs, you say, life offers me, That the choice is mine and that choice is free. Are you quite right in what you say? Maybe the “choice” is there to-day. But what of the past and what I’ve learnt, Did you teach—‘if I play with fire I’m burnt’? ‘Tis true that I’m known as a little wild— The result of my training as a child? Did you teach that my mind must think for itself, Or follow the crowd in its greed for wealth, That I must create with my hands or mind, That in those creations my future find. Did you teach me to give instead of take, Or show me what's true and what’sa fake: Did you show me how evenings I could spend In the basement with different things to mend ; Thus keep me away from the corner crowd, Where the jokes are thick and the girls are loud. Did you teach me that what I put in life Is what I'll get out—success or strife? The choice is mine? Yes ’tis I who choose, But it is in your training I win or lose.
