Well, there’s the story —and as the gentleman says “it all happened different!” THE POLICEMAN THE POLICEMAN is the man who keeps the universe in order, Our guardian grim and democratic prop; The chosen son of Justice and the Law’s unswerving warder Whom disrespectful people call a “cop.” He’s a knowledgeable person with a logic all his own, s Which he uses in the interest of the Law; And Lawyers fume with envy at his grave and measured tone While the Judge looks on in wonderment and awe. He checks the erring citizen and puts him right again, He chases thieves and tussles with the thug; And he blows the silver whistle which he wears upon a chain As he claps them helter-skelter in the jug. And when it comes to murder of the grim and gripping kind, . He’s invariably called on to preside; He revolves the situation in his penetrating mind And he cross-examines everyone inside. He photographs the body and he catalogues the clues, He measures up the footprints in the hall; And then for relaxation while the problem he reviews He chases little boys for playing ball. You'll find the rugged policeman is a decent sort of chap If you wish to buy a licence for your dog, Or you’ve murdered Aunt Matilda and you want to take the rap, Or you’re walking round in circles in a fog. By day you'll find him mooning at the corner of the street Or examining the number plates of cars; While at night he chases bandits who have chanced upon his beat, Or he’s lost in contemplation of the stars. If his appetite for duty tends at moments to enrage, If his homilies occasionally pall; Remember then that error is the child of every sage And the policeman’s only human after all.
