This time he said that she was in London. Having been told three different places Mrs. Hampshire told Ruxton that he was lying, whereupon he broke down and wept saying that his wife had run away with another man and elaborated on this new lie. The same afternoon some garbage men came around, but found the door to the yard closed, so had to come to the front entrance. They saw the debris in the yard and cleaned it up, but Dr. Ruxton told them to leave the carpets as he had given them to Mrs. Hampshire. In reply to a query about blood on a carpet and shirt, Ruxton had said he had severed a finger. Straw and other partly destroyed garments were also observed by the cleaners. Ruxton also told them that his wife had gone tour ing in the car. On the same day, Ruxton took his car to the garage to have the carbon removed although it did not really need it. He then arranged to hire another car, an Austin 12, for a day and a half. This car bore licence No. CP8415. The same evening Mr. Edmondson Jr. was stopped about 9.15 p.m. by a strange car, and found it was driven by Dr. Ruxton. The latter told Edmondson that his wife, Mary and the children had gone away to Scotland for a few days in his own car. Later Ruxton called at the Andersons and asked that the children be kept another night. Anderson examined the cut on Ruxton’s hand and noted that it was quite a clean cut and the bone exposed at one finger. Expressing surprise at this sort of cut from a can opener, and desiring to see it, Ruxton said that he had thrown it away. A little later Ruxton left apparently to go home. This would probably be around 11 p.m. or so. The following morning Mrs. Oxley was admitted to the house by Dr. Ruxton who was dressed in pyjamas. After breakfast Ruxton went to Andersons and got the children and took them to school. He called at a decorators and insisted that he had made some previous arrangement to have his hallway redone, but the man’s daughter could not recall any such arrangement ever having been made. More ALIBIS At 12.35 p.m. a car bearing licence No. CP8415 knocked down a cyclist at Kendal and failed to stop. A “phone call soon had the police watching for the car, and the point man at a little place called Miln- thorpe stopped the car, which was being driven by Ruxton. In the car there was a little boy. He told the police officer that he had been to Carlisle on a business trip and was on his way home to Lancaster. He appeared to be very excited and had neither licence nor insurance certificate. Later, Ruxton said with respect to this incident that he had intended to go to Settle and had not been to Carlisle but had lost his way. As he had to be back in his surgery, he was hurrying home. The Settle trip had been to make arrangements with Mrs. Holme to keep young Billie for a while.
