f ; . International level. ‘Medical services faa Dease Lake The Ministry of Health has made an arrangement with the College of Family Physicians of Canada, B.C. Chapter, to provide medical services in Dease Lake. It has always been difficult to get doctors to serve in re- mote areas because they feel they are not able to use their skills to the utmost and: they are also not able to keep up with current medical knowledge and practices. This is a pilot project in B.C. and is an attempt to over- come this reluctance by rotating the doctors. It will be in operation as soon as the Clinic and residence are complet- ed - possibly as early as November. The Ministry will provide; 1. A Health Clinic and residence in Dease Lake. 2. Transportation to and from the area for the physi- cians and their families and ground and air transport- ation within the area. 3. Payment to the physicians that will meet the min- imum income standard of their profession. It will be the responsibility of the College of Family Physicians, B.C. Chapter, to recruit enough physicians to have a doctor in Dease Lake at all times - this may involve ‘recruiting ’up yeas euyscienss fora vest: "TOWN COUNCIL ELECTIONS VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! The white pelican ‘nicknamed “Charlie” appeared « at. ‘Eddontenajon Lake around the 15th of July, where it adopted an American couple. For two weeks the bird stay-.- ed with them, following their boat and spending the nights cuddled up to it. Whenever they went out fishing: Charlie would fly after them ’and swim in the wake of the. boat, accepting any fish they fed him. When the couple. left Eddontenajon, Charlie moved down to the Iskutine Lodges where he entertained the tourists by bumming fish. With the approach of fall and winter, Charlie showed signs that he had indeed picked the wrong direction to explore, standing forlorn on shore shivering and following anyone who happened to go by in the hope he would be fed. I picked the bird up on September 7 and put it ona plane south to Vancouver where. he(she?) will join an- other lone white pelican at Stanley Park Zoo. | contacted Mr. Wayne Campbell at the Provincial Museum in Victoria and he was quite surprised to hear about Charlie. He said it was probably the furthest north a white pelican had been reported, especially in B.C. at this time of year as they should be in Southern California enjoying the sunshine. we — Voice of Cassiar a - October. 1981 10 cents’ de with a > email breeding Solon of Bae eine ae 150 birds in the Alexis Creek area near Williams Lake in central British Columbia. When the pelicans arrived at Alexis Creek this spring, coyotes were able to harass the flock by crossing on the still frozen breeding grounds. As‘ a result a number of birds were dispersed. Mr. Campbell thinks Charlie is a non-breeding sub-adult bird of about. three years and, being on-his own, when threatened by the coyotes he took off for places. unknown, following the water systems north to Eddontenajon Lake. | think Char- _ lie would have left on his own if people hadn’t kept feed- ing him as he wouldn’t have been able to pick up enough y ‘fish on his own. Unlike other pelicans , the white pelican doesn’t dive for fish, rather a number of them will work together to drive fish into the shallows where they scoop them up. Our deep northern waters would make this dif- ficult to undertake unless they found a shallow lake with lots of coarse fish that go for the shallow areas. The chain lake system is one such area where they could feed, and it would probably make a lot of the local residents happy to see some of the coarse Fish removed.. by Gord Pearson COURT NEWS Court was held in Cassiar on August 20th and the follow- ing cases were dealt with: ‘DANIEL SAVARD pleaded guilty to driving without in- ; surance.
