Over The Edge Page 10 April 7, 1998 Sports News NUGSS Sports & Club Director Resigns by Jeremy Fung After one and a half terms as Sports & Clubs director, Tysen Hodgson resigned. He was accept- ed as a resident's assistant for the school year 1998/99. Tysen said “| accomplished everything | wanted to as a Sports & Clubs director.” These accom- plishments include removing “red-tape” from the process for forming clubs. He created files for each club, and he helped them gain exposure through events such as sports and clubs week. There are two reasons that Tysen resigned. The first is the conflict of interest between the RA posi- tion and the Director position. He agrees that it would be unfair to other people should he remain _ in both positions. Each position requires a heavy amount of time, and juggling a full course load plus both positions would be impossible. The second reason for leaving is for his person- al growth. Tysen enjoyed his terms, however, he wants to help people on an individual level. He said “The RA position is a better position to meet people one on one.” Intramural final results Coed Floor Hockey The Mad Dogs Mark Ii defeated Rock a Doodle Doo Men’s Recreational Floor Hockey Confederates defeated The Chicks Dig it! Feature Club: Travel Club by Jeremy Fung The travel club is a relatively new club, being formed in October of 1997. There are currently 27 students involved with the club. The main pur- pose of the club is to share traveling experiences, since socializing is the primary func- tion of the club, it is a great place to meet people. The members also organize group trips. Zahara was chosen to be president for the travel club because of her travel experi- ence. She has been to Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Kenya, London, UK, US, Canada, and India. So far there have been trips to Salmon Valley, Vancouver, and Toronto. The destination being organized for the sum- mer trip is Australia. Seven members went on the camping trip to Salmon Valley. it was the first trip the club had orga- nized, and it was very experi- menta!. The group bought the necessary equipment and headed out into the snow. Zahara Adam said “| have never felt so cold in my life,” however, she went on to say that “It was a once in a lifetime experience, and very enjoy- able.” The group hiked during the days, and shivered in their tents during the nights. Meetings are organized once a month, approximately ten members regularly attend meetings. At these gatherings people discuss their experi- ences, what they like about traveling, and where they Hockey night at UNBC The woman’s hockey rec. league battled for honours. By the time of the Africa trip Zahara will have finished her degree, and be living in Kenya. She will act as a tour guide for the Africa trip. The club is able to get dis- counts from various travel businesses. On their trip to Toronto, they were able to rent a van to Vancouver for free. Getting official recognition as a travel club is the number one priority for the club. Once they get this recognition, they will offer deals to all students.
