NOVEMBER 5 2003 Welcome Io My Nightmare The Life of Our Timberwolf By Jessica Johnson UNBC’s mascot lives a double life. The Timberwolf is a ferocious and frightening animal that is not afraid of anything and will attack if necessary. But when you look at “It took a long time to find the right figure for the idea, but the search paid off, as we now have the perfect image of a grey Timberwolf with huge front teeth.” the little guy in the window of the university bookstore, he looks awfully sweet and cuddly, does- rt he? This is the idea behind the mar- keting of our school mascot. Mardeana Berg, manager of the UNBC bookstore, says that the concept of the Timberwolf had to look tough, but that with the introduction of the stuffed ani- mal, he became more loveable and everybody wanted one. In 2000, Berg and her staff were asked to create a new mascot to go along with the Timberwolves theme. This is when they devel- oped the line of clothing, acces- sories and novelty items, com- plete with the stuffed animals and the paw print design (seen on the Timberwolf’s t-shirt and the seat cushions). “They needed to be very assertive,” says Berg of the Timberwolf mascot. “When there’s a new guy on the block, they can’t be that nice little guy that everybody likes. They need to be mean.” : It took a long time to find the right figure for the idea, but the search paid off, as we now have the perfect image of a grey Timberwolf with huge front teeth. These particular styles of the stuffed animal are about to move ~ into mainstream though, and the mascot is going to change his clothes. Berg says that they are moving him from simply representing the sports teams, into being more of a representative of the school as a whole. With this, the mascot will become of part of the bookstore’s general line, along with the teddy “The “Welcome To My Nightmare” t-shirt, refers to our athletes being the competition's nightmares” bears with the UNBC t-shirts and hoodies. The “Welcome To My Nightmare” t-shirt, which refers to our athletes being the competi- tion’s nightmares, will be replaced with a simple UNBC logo with the paw print by next year. The first shipment of the new mascots should be in for Christmas, but the originals will still be available for the rest of the year. SPORTS 17 .
